Texas Two-Step For MSU Women’s Tennis
February 18, 2022 | Women's Tennis
WACO, Texas – Mississippi State's women's tennis team is heading over to the Lone Star State to face SMU and No. 24 Baylor on Saturday at noon and Sunday at 11 a.m. respectively.
MSU's (6-1) last action came in a doubleheader against North Alabama in which the Bulldogs swept 4-1, 4-0.
SMU (4-2) is coming off a close 4-3 victory at South Florida. The Bulldogs are 2-3 all-time against the Mustangs and have not faced each other since the 2006 season.
The host team, Baylor (4-3), is headlined by the No. 4 doubles pairing of Alicia Herrero Linana and Melany Krywoj. State has only faced Baylor once, which was a 4-3 loss for the Bulldogs in 2020.
Baylor and SMU will face one another on Friday before facing State.
MSU has been dominant in doubles play this season having secured all seven doubles points this spring and owning a 16-1 doubles mark in dual match play.
Two duos in particular have shined for the Bulldogs. The 24th-ranked tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Chloé Cirotte are riding an eight-match win streak heading into the weekend and have earned a 7-0 mark in dual match play. Similarly, the senior duo of Emmanouela Antonaki and Tamara Racine have won seven in a row and are 5-0 in dual match play.
Singles play has been stellar as well as State has combined for a 24-6 ledger dual match play.
Cirotte has been on a tear as of late, having won nine of her last 10 matches. Her doubles partner Adaloglou, who is ranked 107th nationally, has produced a solid 3-1 record at the No. 1 spot of the lineup.
No. 72 Antonaki earned a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory in her last match against North Alabama and improved her dual match record to 4-2 this spring.
Freshman Alessia Tagliente has been impressive since joining the team in January and has earned a 5-0 mark in singles with each win coming in straight sets.
Antonaki also has a chance to move up in the record books this weekend as she sits one singles win below Linda Mattsson (1998-01) and Mariella Jimenez (1985-88), who are tied for sixth all-time with 69 career singles wins. Similarly, Antonaki needs two more doubles victories to tie Anastasia Rentoulli (2016-19) and Georgiana Patrasc (2013-16) for fifth all-time with 63 career doubles victories.
