Broska Beats Two-Time All-American To Advance
September 22, 2021 | Men's Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mississippi State's Florian Broska proved he belonged in the main draw of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Fayetteville 15K with an opening round win over two-time All-American Tyler Zink on Wednesday.
Broska downed Zink in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and made the International Tennis Association (ITA) look good in the process. The ITA ranked Broska 27th in its preseason singles rankings, just ahead of Zink at No. 30.
"Flo' did an awesome job playing to win and trusting his game in all aspects today," said MSU assistant coach Jake Jacoby. "His opponent made some great adjustments and made the match tough for 'Flo', as he is a very experienced and high-level player in his own right. 'Flo' stayed mentally tough from the first point to the last and should take a lot of confidence from today."
Broska and Zink were both second team All-SEC selections last spring. Zink was also two-time All-American during his time at Georgia but has since transferred to Oklahoma State for his junior season.
"It was a very solid match today with very few ups and downs," Broska said. "It feels great to play matches after having a very few weeks of practice and I'm excited for the next opportunity."
Broska will not have to wait long for that opportunity either. He meets Mark Whitehouse of Great Britain in the second round on Thursday afternoon. Whitehouse, 28, currently holds an ITF singles ranking of 276 and won the ITF 15K event in Norman, Oklahoma in 2019.
Wednesday's win was Broska's third of the Fayetteville 15K. He also defeated Kiranpal Pannu of New Zealand 6-2, 7-6(5) and MSU teammate Davide Tortora 6-2, 6-4 during the qualifying rounds of the event.
