September 23, 2021 | Men's Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., – Mississippi State's Florian Broska bowed out of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Fayetteville 15K in the second round on Thursday.
Broska was beaten by Mark Whitehouse of Great Britain 6-3, 7-6(2) but still had a strong showing with three victories at the event.
The graduate from Germany posted wins over Kiranpal Pannu of New Zealand 6-2, 7-6(5) and MSU teammate Davide Tortora 6-2, 6-4 during the qualifying rounds and also knocked off two-time All-American Tyler Zink from Oklahoma State in the opening round of the main draw.
Broska was one of four Bulldogs competing in the Fayetteville 15K. Nemanja Malesevic took down Kiranpal Pannu of New Zealand 6-2, 7-6(5) on the opening day of qualifying before dropping a second round qualifying match against Blu Baker of Great Britain 6-4, 6-2.
Tortora earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory against American Chad Kissell in the first round of qualifying while Carles Hernandez lost his lone match 6-2, 6-2 to Jeffrey Von Der Schulenberg of the University of Virginia.
"Today didn't go Flo's way but there was so much to learn and gain from this week for all four guys that played here in Fayetteville," said MSU assistant coach Jake Jacoby. "Staying hungry to constantly learn and improve is always the goal and we will return to Starkville knowing the areas to focus on after a solid tournament."
State now turns its attention to hosting the MSU Bulldog Invitational on Oct. 1-3. Michigan, Alabama and Tulane will all invade the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre and Rula Tennis Pavilion to compete in a round robin tournament.
The Bulldogs first action of the tournament will be against Tulane on Oct. 1 at 3 p.m.
