Women's Tennis Adds Three Singles Wins On Saturday
September 18, 2021 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mississippi State's women's tennis picked up a trio of singles victories on Day 2 at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic hosted by Furman on Saturday.
Magda Adaloglou bounced back after a tough loss on Friday by winning in straight sets over Yufei Long of Vanderbilt, 6-4, 6-2.Â
Adaloglou's win was followed up by a decisive victory by Marta Falceto over Sara McClure of UNC, who for the second day in a row won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.Â
Falceto now moves on to the Flight 10 final on Sunday in hopes of going 3-0 in singles play for the weekend.Â
Emmanouela Antonaki notched her first win of the fall against South Carolina's No. 50 Megan Davies. Antonaki fought back after losing the first set 4-6 and won the next two with ease, 6-0, 6-1.
"Magda did an outstanding job," said MSU assistant coach Sachin Kirtane. "She raised her game significantly from yesterday to today. Marta was great. The standout win today was Emma. Beating a girl who is ranked and also beat her in straight sets this past season. For her to come out and win 6-0, 6-1 is tremendous. She made a huge jump from yesterday to today."
Both Tamara Racine and Chloé Cirotte won their first set, but fell in three sets to their opponents.Â
"Overall, we performed a little better today than we did yesterday," Kirtane said. "I feel like the biggest difference was we converted a lot more of our chances than yesterday.I am proud of them for making that jump [and] coming out and competing like they did today."
MSU's doubles did not fare as well today, dropping all three matches.Â
The duo of Antonaki and Racine fell 2-6 to the No. 26 pair of Julia Adams and Madison Dillon of Furman. Meanwhile, the pairings of Adaloglou and Cirotte as well as Falceto and Alexandra Mikhailuk each lost 4-6 in their respective matches.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with one round of singles play starting at 8:00 am CT.
