Shayla Broughton brings in All-American honors in the Heptathlon.
EUGENE, Ore. – Mississippi State track and field's Shayla Broughton closed the 2021 NCAA Championships with the conclusion of the heptathlon at Hayward Field.
Broughton finished in ninth overall with 5,652 points to become Second Team All-American.
"Shayla competed well today and represented us well," said head coach Chris Woods. "I'm proud of the way she overcame all of the obstacles that were thrown at her throughout the course of her career. She's proven to be the leader of this women's team and I know she will be much better next year."
On the first day of the heptathlon competition, she finished with 3,502 points. She finished third with 1,074 points in the 100m hurdles, eighth in the high jump with 842 points, eighth in the shot put at 702 points, and 12th in the 200m with 884 points.
The second day consisted of three more events to complete the heptathlon. In the long jump she came in third amassing 890 points, and had a new personal best in the javelin, throwing to a mark of 34.03m for 535 points. To finish off the day she came in 18th in the 800m, earning 707 points.
