
The Road to Tokyo: USATF Olympic Trials

Seven current and former Mississippi State track and field student-athletes earned the opportunity to compete for a spot on the United States Olympic Team. Six of them competed at the USATF Olympic Trials to gain that spot to the Tokyo Olympics as Keshun Byrd suffered an injury prior to the Trials.
Alumna Erica Bougard has punched her ticket to Tokyo after finishing third in the heptathlon.
They are listed in order of appearance at the Trials.
 Thompson is officially on the Road to Tokyo after capturing the U.S. Title on his final attempt on June 21, throwing a season-best 82.78m mark! He had three marks over the 80m mark in total and his win is the largest margin of victory at 3.54m (11' 7") in Trials history. Thompson threw to a second-place finish in the qualifying round of the javelin on June 19 with a throw of 76.23m (250'1").
The United States Olympic Team will be announced in full on July 4.

Tiffany Flynn – Long Jump
In the finals, Flynn finished in fourth overall with a new personal-best mark at 6.80m. She qualified for the finals by recording a third-place finish in the first round with a mark of 6.72m.Sarah Blake – Javelin
In the qualifying round, Blake finished just 1.07m short of advancing to the finals of the javelin.Cameron Crump – Long Jump
In the finals, Crump finished seventh overall at 7.91m. Crump jumped to a personal-best on June 25th to advance to the finals of the long jump, finishing eighth at 7.99m.Jesse Henderson – 110m Hurdles
On June 25, Henderson finished 17th in the prelims of the hurdles, just missing advancing to the finals by two spots.Erica Bougard – Heptathlon
Bougard punched her ticket to Tokyo after posting a final point total of 6,667 points to earn bronze and a spot on Team USA for the heptathlon. Day two featured a third-place long jump finish (6.50m, 1007 points), a third-place finish in the javelin (46.75m, 797 points), and a second place finish in the 800m (2:10.93, 951 points). On day one of the heptathlon (6/26), Bougard came in third in the 100m hurdles (12.92, 1136 points), first in the high jump (1.87m, 1067 points), 14th in the shot put (12.38m, 686 points), and fourth in the 200m (23.56, 1023 points).The United States Olympic Team will be announced in full on July 4.
