Bulldogs Set for SEC Outdoor Championships

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Mississippi State track and field team begins competition in the 2021 SEC Outdoor Championships on Thursday, May 13. The meet runs through Saturday, May 15, and is hosted by Texas A&M at E.B. Cushing Stadium.

With the 2020 meet being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bulldogs are itching to get back to this elite level of competition amongst conference schools.

The men's hammer will kickstart the meet for the Bulldogs with Daniel Pepper competing at noon. The heptathlon with Shayla Broughton, Asia Poe and Aley Woodberry will start with the 100m hurdles at 2:20 p.m. Following will be their competition in the high jump, shot put and 200m. The women's javelin with Sarah Blake and Caroline Standley starts at 3:30 p.m., while the men will begin throwing at 6:30 p.m. featuring national and SEC leader Sindri Guðmundsson and the No. 3 in the nation, DJ Jónsson.

On the track, both 800m, 200m and 400m hurdles will complete their prelims, starting at 6:30 p.m. with the men's 800m. Navasky Anderson, Leon Clarke, Gabriel Moronta and Kenya Small are set to run the 800, with Ashley Melcherts running for the women. The 200m will have Jordan Barrow, Cameron Crump, Sema'J Daniels, Keldrick Edwards, Okheme Moore and Shamar Rose, with Jada McDougle for the women. Rosealee Cooper, Katie Martin, Cathrina Morris and Riley White will run the 400m hurdles. The 10,000m will be the last event of the day for the Bulldogs with Chandler Underwood competing.Â

Thursday's action will be streamed on the SEC Network + (5:40-9:30 p.m. CT). Friday will also be shown on the SECN+ (4:35-9:30 p.m.), while Saturday's events will be on the SEC Network (5-9 p.m.). Flash Results will be the timing company for the meet.

Multiple SEC schools are among the top 30 of the USTFCCCA rankings on the men's and women's side going into the Championships. Eight men's SEC teams are ranked in the top-20. The Bulldog men hold strong in the No. 28 position after being featured in that top-30 all season.

Mississippi State also has several student-athletes ranked in the top-10 of their respective events in the SEC rankings going into the meet, including a one-two duo in the javelin squad of Guðmundsson, Jónsson. Blake is ranked at No. 7 for the women. In the heptathlon, Broughton and Poe are ranked sixth and eighth, respectively. Cooper and Jesse Henderson are both ranked eighth for the 100 and 110m hurdles. Cameron Crump is ninth in the long jump while Keshun Byrd is 10th in the triple jump. Sylvia Russell is ninth in the 3000m steeplechase, and Leon Clarke is 10th in the 800m.
