Javelin Gets a Win on Day 1 of SEC Outdoors

DJ Jónsson threw to a win and collegiate lead in Texas.
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Mississippi State track and field team had a successful first day at the SEC Outdoor Championships with DJ Jónsson winning the javelin with a collegiate-leading mark.
Jónsson threw a personal-best mark of 78.66m in the javelin to take the event and trade spots in the NCAA rankings with teammate Sindri Guðmundsson who was the runner-up in the event. It was both Icelanders first SEC Championships as Jónsson is a freshman and Guðmundsson a transfer.
Shayla Broughton, Asia Poe and Aley Woodberry completed the first four events of the heptathlon, the 100m hurdles, high jump, javelin, and shot put. Moving into day two of competition, Broughton is in third, Woodberry in ninth and Poe in 10th.
The trio had several personal-bests through their four events. All three had bests in the 100m hurdle which Broughton won, all three in the 200m, then Broughton tied her best in the high jump and found a new best in the shot put with Poe.
In the women's javelin, Sarah Blake returned to the field and finished in ninth, while Caroline Standley found a season best, throwing to a 12th-place finish. In the men's hammer, Daniel Pepper came in 17th.
For the qualifying events, the Bulldogs ran well, but only a handful moved on to the finals in their competitions.
In the men's 800m, two moved on to the finals on Saturday. Navasky Anderson and Gabriel Moronta both ran to personal-bests and qualified, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Finishing in 11th and 24th were Leon Clarke and Kenya Small. Ashley Melcherts was the lone 800m on the women's side, finishing in 25thoverall.
The 200m had two personal bests from Jordan Barrow and Keldrick Edwards, but there were no qualifiers for the finals. Shamar Rose was the first finisher for the Bulldogs in 16th, Cameron Crump in 17th, then Okheme Moore with a season best in 19th. In 23rd was Sema'J Daniels, in 26th Edwards, and Barrow in 31st. Jada McDougle ran on the women's side, finishing in 17th.
The 400m hurdles had four Bulldogs racing, all finishing in the top 20. Katie Martin came in 13th, Rosealee Cooper in 15th, Cathrina Morris in 16th, and Riley White in 18th. It was Cooper and Morris' first 400m hurdle race.
Finishing off the day was the 10,000m run, a final race. Chandler Underwood ran it solo for the Bulldogs, coming in 13th place in 30:43.19.
Through day one, the Mississippi State men have 18 points and are in fourth place. The women have not scored as of yet.

An action-packed day for the SEC and the Bulldogs, they will compete in a total of 18 events overall.
The heptathlon will wrap up with the long jump, javelin and 800m.
Preliminary rounds will occur for the 100m and 110m hurdles, the 1500m, 400m, and the 100m races. Finals will occur for the 3000m steeplechase only.
On the field side, the women's hammer, long jump, pole vault and shot put will take place, as well as the men's shot put and long jump.
