Bulldogs Set for Split Meet Weekend

The Dawgs will be headed to both Auburn and Virginia from April 16-17.
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State track and field team will be spending the weekend split between two meets, the War Eagle Invitational at Auburn and Virginia's Virginia Challenge. Both take place on April 16 and 17.Â

The majority of the squad will be in Alabama at the War Eagle Invitational, with four distance runners headed to Charlottesville, Virginia, for the Cavaliers' Virginia Challenge meet.

The Bulldogs will see a limited amount of action on the first day at Auburn, with many of the events being on the field side. The throws group is set to compete in the men's and women's hammer and javelin, while the jumpers will participate in the men's and women's long jump.

Virginia Challenge
MSU's distance runners see most of their competition at Virginia on day one, with Sydney Steely making her debut in the 1500m, Sylvia Russell looking to improve on her 3000m steeplechase time, Giacomo DeLuca making his 5000m debut, and Chandler Underwood running his first 10,000m race of the season.

The bulk of the action will take place on day two in Alabama, with the Bulldogs scheduled to compete in 27 events overall across the men's and women's squads. For the runners, there will be participants competing in the 100m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, 800m, 1500m, and 5000m. For the relays, there will be participants in the 4x100m and 4x400m. On the field side, there will be Bulldogs in the women's pole vault, triple jump, high jump, discus and shot put, while the men compete in the triple jump, discus and shot put.

In Virginia, the Bulldogs are entered in just one event on day two: Sydney Steely will debut in the 800m race.

The Virginia Challenge will see a larger field of more than 50 schools at Lannigan Field. Among those are Richmond, Duke, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Pitt, Liberty, Georgetown, North Carolina, Boston College, Boston, Florida State, Tennessee, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Villanova, NC State, and more.Â

Through the first three weeks of competition, three Bulldogs have earned a weekly award from the SEC. Week one it was Sindri Guðmundsson as Male Field Athlete of the Week, week two it was DJ Jónsson as Male Freshman of the Week, and week three was Jesse Henderson as Male Freshman of the Week.

The War Eagle Invitational will not be allowing outside spectators into the event. The Virginia Challenge's attendance is limited to family of student-athletes and the coaching staffs.Â

Eyes on the Olympics
Wednesday, April 13, marked 100 days from the start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Games were postponed from the summer of 2020 due to the global coronavirus pandemic, but are set to begin competition on Friday, July 23 of 2021. Two former Bulldogs were listed in early medal predictions recently: Marco Arop for the 800m for Canada and Anderson Peters for the javelin for Grenada. There are several other names of current and former Bulldogs who would like to be chosen to travel to Tokyo, but only time will tell.Â
