Day One of Split Meet Weekend Successful for Bulldogs

AUBURN, Ala. – The first day showed success in both Virginia and Auburn for the Mississippi State track and field team's split meet weekend. The Bulldogs found personal bests at both the War Eagle Invitational and the Virginia Challenge.

There was a long jump sweep at Auburn with Cameron Crump and Shayla Broughton both taking first place finishes. Crump had a mark at 6.98m while Broughton had a personal-best mark of 6.30m. Also in the men's competition was Keshun Byrd who finished in fifth. Alexis Farley and Tierra Hooker also competed on the women's side, finishing in seventh and 13th, respectively.Â

Continuing the winning ways in the Tiger's town was DJ Jónsson who won the javelin with a collegiate personal-best mark at 77.33m. Tyriq Horsford came in third at 68.46m. On the women's side, Caroline Standley came in 16th, Jenna Oetting in 17th with a PR, Aley Woodberry in 21st, and Asia Poe in 23rd.

In the hammer throws, Daniel Pepper set a new personal best at 56.53m en route to breaking the freshman outdoor record in the event and moving into the No. 3 all-time slot for State. Trent Zelden finished in 16th place at 46.04m, also a personal-best. On the women's side, Francesca Chambers finished in 15th in 49.96m.

In Virginia, Sylvia Russell got things started for the Dawgs with an eighth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase.Â

In her 1500m debut, Sydney Steely also came in eighth at 4:21.22, a team best.

Giacomo DeLuca ran to a personal-best finish in the 5000m with a time of 14:27.93 in 39th place.

Chandler Underwood made his season debut in the 10,000m, finishing in 14th place with a personal best of 29:58.36. That time moves him into the No. 4 all-time slot at Mississippi State.

Day two of the War Eagle Invite is action packed, with the Bulldogs competing in 27 different events overall. On the track, Dawgs will be competing in the 100m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, 800m, 1500m, and 5000m. For the relays, there will be participants in the 4x100m and 4x400m. On the field side, there will be Bulldogs in the women's pole vault, triple jump, high jump, discus and shot put, while the men compete in the triple jump, discus and shot put.

At the Virginia Challenge, only one event will see a Bulldog entry: Sydney Steely will make her debut in the 800m.
