State Women’s Tennis Shuts Out North Alabama, Moves To 7-0
February 07, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State women's tennis team (7-0) continued its success Sunday as the Bulldogs handed North Alabama (1-3) a 7-0 defeat at State's Rula Tennis Pavilion. The shutout marks the fifth in 2021 for MSU, which has limited its opponents to just two points all season.
The Bulldogs remained perfect against the Lions, now leading the all-time series 5-0. With the victory, State also improved to 7-0 to start a season for the first time since 2009, when the program began with an 8-0 record. State has not lost a non-conference match in Starkville since 2013, having won 45 straight such matches during that span.
"I thought we were solid again today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "The girls are doing a pretty good job playing with a sense of urgency. We are playing better every week, and the girls are working hard to continue that trend."
Chloé Cirotte and Lilian Poling set the tone for the afternoon after they cruised past UNA's Kalais Going and Nina Linke 6-1 in their first-ever doubles match together as a duo. Bulldogs Magda Adaloglou and Marta Falceto kept the ball rolling with a 6-2 victory on court 3 over Lions Lee-Taylor Bishop and Sydney Flesch to earn the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
On court 1, Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk extended their team-leading win streak to double digits by claiming a 6-3 decision over Payton Andrews and Megan Humphreys, their 10th-straight triumph dating back to last season.
In singles, all six Bulldogs recorded straight-set victories for the second time in two days, and no one allowed more than three games in a set.
For the second match in a row, the true freshman Cirotte was first off the court for MSU, as she rolled past North Alabama's Nicole Reilly 6-0, 6-0 on court 5. The rookie remained perfect (6-0) in singles dual matches in her first season in the Maroon and White.
Adaloglou and Antonaki then finished within a minute of each other on courts 2 and 1, respectively. Adaloglou led the way with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over UNA's Flesch at No. 2, before the 69th-ranked Antonaki downed Payton Andrews 6-2, 6-2 at the top position in the lineup to secure the team victory for State. Adaloglou has come out victorious in 14 of her last 16 singles affairs dating back to last spring. Antonaki extended her remarkable singles win streak to 14 matches, which leads the Bulldogs.
Falceto then recorded her fourth dual match win (4-0) in 2021 in an impressive 6-1, 6-0 triumph over the Lions' Bishop on court 6, improving to 10-2 in singles this year. Then, Poling extended MSU's advantage to 6-0, ousting Linke 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. The senior improved to 11-2 in singles this year, also 4-0 in dual match play, and has won six straight.
State's Mikhailuk completed the shutout on court 3 with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Humphreys. Mikhailuk has now claimed her last nine consecutive singles contests, as well as 11 of her last 12.
With their doubles and singles wins Sunday, Antonaki and Mikhailuk remained perfect in 2021, both now owning 18-0 overall ledgers (9-0 doubles, 9-0 singles) this spring.
