MSU Women’s Tennis Puts Up Strong Fight But Falls To No. 3 Georgia
February 28, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State women's tennis team was handed its first setback in nine matches at home this season by No. 3 Georgia Sunday in a 4-0 decision at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. State pushed the stout UGA lineup to four third sets even after dropping the opening doubles point.
With the loss, State dropped to 9-3 overall, 1-3 in SEC play, while Georgia improved to 7-1 overall and remained perfect at 3-0 in the conference.
Georgia earned the doubles point by grabbing wins on courts 2 and 3. UGA's 37th-ranked tandem of Elena Christofi and Morgan Coppoc dealt Bulldogs Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk a 6-1 loss on court 2 before MSU's 41st-ranked tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine handed Georgia's Ariana Arseneault and Katarina Jokic their first loss in dual match play this season with a 6-3 victory at the top position. UGA's Meg Kowalski and Lea Ma then completed a 6-3 win over MSU's duo of Chloé Cirotte and Lilian Poling on court 3 to take the early 1-0 lead.
UGA took the first set on four courts to begin singles and would get two straight-set wins for a 3-0 advantage. On court 4, MSU's Poling fell 6-1, 6-1 to Georgia's 73rd-ranked Coppoc. UGA's 50th-ranked Marta Gonzalez bested Bulldog rookie Cirotte 6-3, 6-1 on court 5.
But it would take UGA a while to secure the decisive fourth point of the match, as State fought back and the teams split sets in the final four matches of the afternoon.
Georgia finally clinched the match on court 3 where MSU's Mikhailuk dropped her match 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to UGA's 60th-ranked Kowalski. All remaining matches were suspended at that point.
MSU's No. 69 Antonaki led 16th-ranked Jokic of UGA at the top spot in the lineup - 4-6, 6-2, 5-2 - when play was halted. On court 2, the Bulldog veteran Adaloglou had just split sets with Georgia's 31st-ranked Ma 5-7, 7-5. State's Marta Falceto and Georgia's Christofi had each claimed a set and were in the third with Christofi leading 3-6, 6-2, 5-1 on court 6.
