
Bulldogs Are Set for A Three Match Stretch in Starkville

STARKVILLE, Miss. – No. 49 Mississippi State women's tennis stays at home for the week for a ranked matchup and their sixth doubleheader of the season.
The Bulldogs will open the week with a ranked test against No. 9 Oklahoma on March 19 at 3 p.m. before hosting No. 50 Arkansas and Southern Mississippi on March 21 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Mississippi State enters the week following a conference win against Missouri, 4-0.
The Bulldogs currently sit at No. 49 in the latest ITA team rankings. In doubles play, three State pairings represent the maroon and white. Gianna Oboniye and Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz sits at No. 22, Chiara Di Genova and Kempenaers-Pocz slide into slot No. 55, and Athina Pitta and Oboniye make their first appearance in the spring rankings at No. 52
Pitta and Oboniye have a pair of ranked wins under their belt this season. The pair defeated Texas' No. 50 Elizabeth Ionescu and Christasha McNeil, 6-4 and Vanderbilt's No. 16 Valeria Ray and Bridget Stammel, 6-1.
State has a non-conference winning streak of 23 under Coach Hooshyar and is 25-7 when competing in doubleheaders.
No. 9 Oklahoma enters the week on a five-match winning streak, including three wins over ranked opponents, two of which were in the top ten. Their recent victories was a doubleheader sweep against No. 7 LSU and Oral Roberts. Mississippi State will look to earn their first win against the Sonner's in only their second matchup in series history.
No. 50 Arkansas is coming off a loss at home against our in state rivals, Ole Miss. The Razorbacks will travel to Alabama before heading to Starkville for Saturday's test. Arkansas has claimed each matchup between the programs since 2019. The last time Mississippi State defeated the Razorbacks was a 4-3 win in Fayetteville in 2018.
Southern Mississippi will be at Southern for a matchup on March 19 before traveling to Starkville for Saturday's contest. The Golden Eagles are coming off a loss against UTSA, 0-4. The Bulldogs are on a 24 match winning streak against Southern Mississippi and look to add one more this weekend.
