No. 25 MSU Women’s Tennis Falls At Arkansas
February 22, 2021 | Women's Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas handed No. 25 Mississippi State women's tennis its second setback of the 2021 campaign in a 4-0 decision Monday afternoon indoors at UA's Billingsley Tennis Center.
State dropped to 8-2 overall, 0-2 in SEC play, with the setback while Arkansas – which was receiving votes in the most recent ITA national rankings - improved to 7-0, 2-0 SEC. The Razorbacks now own a 16-14 advantage in the all-time series, and have claimed the last two meetings between the programs after five straight Bulldog wins.
"This match was much closer than the 4-0 score indicates but the bottom line was Arkansas outplayed us in some key moments," MSU head coach Daryl Greenan said. "There are definitely a few things we need to do better if we are going to win at this level. First, and foremost, we need all six players fighting and playing to win. It was a tough weekend overall. The competition is going to be stiff every weekend moving forward. We are just going to have to keep training hard and getting better every week."
Arkansas notched the doubles point to open the match with a couple of close 6-4 triumphs. The Razorbacks' Morgan Cross and Indianna Spink handed Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk their first loss this season, 6-4 on court 2. Chloé Cirotte and Lilian Poling then fell to UA's duo of Kelly Keller and Laura Rjikers by the same score on court 3 to give the Razorbacks the early 1-0 lead. State's 41st-ranked tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine were down 5-3 against 28th-ranked Razorbacks Lauren Alter and Tatum Rice at No. 1 when the doubles point was clinched.
Arkansas took the early lead on four courts to start singles and closed out the match by claiming the first three matches complete.
At the top spot in the lineup, MSU's Racine fell 6-4, 6-0 to Arkansas' Kelly Keller after a tight first set. Then, Cross bested Mikhailuk 6-2, 6-2 on court 4, before the Razorbacks' Spink clinched the match in a three-set battle on court 2. There, MSU's 69th-ranked Antonaki claimed the first set 6-4, before Spink fought back to take the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. The setback ended Antonaki's 16-match singles win streak, which dated back to last season.
The final three matches of the day were then suspended. State's Adaloglou faced Rice on court 3, where Rice led 6-4, 4-5. On court 5, MSU's Poling claimed set one over Arkansas' Alter 7-5 and Alter was up 6-5 in the second set at the stoppage of play. At the No. 6 spot, the Bulldog true freshman Cirotte had dropped the first set to Jackie Carr 6-3, but the two were in a tiebreaker in the second set when action was halted.
