Missouri Upends No. 25 MSU In 4-3 Marathon
February 20, 2021 | Women's Tennis
COLUMBIA, Mo. – In a match that featured two tiebreakers, three three-set affairs and lasted nearly five hours, homestanding Missouri upset No. 25 Mississippi State in the 2021 Southeastern Conference opener for both teams Saturday evening at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
State endured its first setback of the season, dropping to 8-1 overall, 0-1 in SEC play. Missouri improved to 12-3, 1-0. The Tigers broke a six-match MSU win streak in the series, which the Bulldogs still lead 8-2 overall.
"That was a tough match to lose," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "All 4-3 matches are. We had our chances but I give credit to Missouri who really stepped up and took it from us down the stretch. This was the closest match we have played all year, and I am sure we will play many more like it. We just have to put this one behind us and get ready for Arkansas Monday."
State claimed the doubles point for the ninth time in its nine matches this season. Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk continued their success as they rolled past Mizzou's tandem of Elys Ventura and Ellie Wright 6-0 to extend their team-leading doubles win streak to 12, which dates back to last season. On court 3, Bulldogs Chloé Cirotte and Lilian Poling downed Gabrielle Golden and Serena Nash 6-2 to clinch the doubles point and put MSU ahead 1-0.
State's 41st-ranked tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine were tied 4-4 with Tigers Bronte Murgett and Marta Oliveira when play was suspended.
In singles, Mizzou earned the first point to even the score at 1-1 as Racine fell to Murgett 6-3, 7-6(1) at the top spot in the lineup. The Tigers gained a 2-1 advantage when Oliveira downed Mikhailuk 6-3, 6-4 on court 4 to bring the Bulldog's 10-match singles win streak to an end.
MSU's 69th-ranked Antonaki faced Wright on court 2, where she earned her 16th-straight singles triumph with a 6-4, 7-6(2) margin to even the match at 2-2. With her doubles and singles victories Saturday, Antonaki remained perfect in 2021, now owning a 22-0 overall ledger (11-0 doubles, 11-0 singles) this spring.
After falling to Vazquez 6-1 in the first set, the Bulldogs' Adaloglou roared back valiantly in the second and third for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. Adaloglou has now come out victorious in six-straight matches, as well as 16 of her last 18 singles affairs dating back to last spring.
With State up 3-2, the last two matches both went to third sets to decide the match and the Tigers would claim both in fierce battles that went to the wire to be decided.
On court 5, Missouri's Ventura outlasted MSU's Poling in a tight 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3 affair. The clincher came on court 6, where the MSU true freshman Cirotte was edged by Tiger senior Nash 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was the first dual match singles setback of the season for both State players who were a combined 12-0 coming into the contest.
