Broughton Wins Pentathlon at Music City Challenge

Bulldogs compete in day two of Music City Challenge as well as USC Indoor Open on Saturday.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mississippi State track and field saw success on day one of Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge, with a pentathlon win and nine personal bests set across the board.

Senior Shayla Broughton placed first in the pentathlon with 4,090 points. The senior nearly swept the events, finishing first in four out of the five events and setting new personal bests in three of them, as well as her overall point total. She is now in the No. 2 spot all-time at Mississippi State in the pentathlon, moving up from the No. 3 spot.

She was hot throughout the competition, finishing first in both the 60m hurdles at 8.37 for 1,046 points and the high jump with a personal-best 1.74m jump for 903 points to start it off. She and Asia Poe are now tied at No. 5 in the record books at Mississippi State for the indoor high jump.Â

She finished in first in the shot put at 11.45m, a new personal-best for 632 points, raking in a first-place finish as well in the long jump at 5.79m for 786 points. She finished second in the 800m at 2:27.60, a new personal-best for 723 points.

Both Helen Claire Edmonds and Emilia Lesniak set new personal bests in the high jump. Edmonds finished in second place at a height of 1.72m, while Lesniak finished fifth at 1.59m.

Francesca Chambers finished in 10th in the weight throw at 17.09m.

In the long jump, Jacob Belin came in fifth with a distance of 6.24m. On the women's side, freshman Kennedy Jackson finished in third at 5.96m in her first collegiate competition.

The trio of men's throwers, Daniel Pepper, Cade Finley and Trent Zelden, finished in eighth, 10th and 11th, respectively. Pepper threw to a new personal-best of 16.50m, replacing his previous of 16.09m. Finley had a throw of 13.62m while Zelden threw to a mark of 13.52m.

In the women's mile, sophomore Sydney Steely ran to a sixth-place finish with a time of 4:47.52 while senior Ashley Melcherts finished in 29th at a personal-best time of 5:04.15. The men's mile had senior Kenya Small finish in 35th at a time of 4:22.28.

Mary Beth Woodward finished the 5000m with a new personal best of 17:42.15, finishing in 23rd place, while teammate Ava Weems finished in 27th in 18:27.95. Chandler Underwood finished in 14:33.02 in 18th with a new personal-best.

The Bulldogs will be splitting Saturday's competition in Nashville in day two of the Music City Challenge and at the USC Indoor Open in Columbia, South Carolina.

Both meets will be streamed on SECN+. Results will continue to be provided by CFPI Timing for the Vanderbilt meet, while South Carolina's results will be provided by Adkins Trak.

The Bulldogs will continue their work in Nashville on day two of the meet with the women's shot put starting things off at noon. Following will be the men's and women's 60m hurdle finals, the women's pole vault, both men's and women's 800m, men's shot put, and the men's and women's 3000m run.

USC Indoor Open
State will be a part of some elite competition at South Carolina, with SEC competitors Auburn, South Carolina, and Georgia as a part of the meet, along with Benedict, Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Citadel, Coastal Carolina, Northern Colorado, Savannah State, South Carolina State, and Southern Wesleyan competing as well.Â

The first event of the day begins at 10 a.m. CT with both the men's and women's long jump. Junior Jesse Henderson looks to continue his climb in the 60m hurdles along with freshman Rosealee Cooper. The coverage of the meet on SECN+ will begin at 10 a.m. CT as well.Â
