Split-Meet Weekend a Success for the Bulldogs

The Bulldogs had five first-place finishes on Saturday.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Mississippi track and field team had a busy Saturday, splitting the day between the Music City Challenge at Vanderbilt and South Carolina's USC Indoor Open. Two school records were broken and there were five first-place finishes overall.
"Our goal this weekend was to get on the bus headed back to Starkville with multiple National Championship qualifiers," said head coach Chris Woods. "We feel that we have done that this weekend. The next meet is the Conference Championship; it's now time to turn our sights and focuses solely on that. We had several school records go down over the weekend which should lead to a lot of confidence going into our most important meet of the season."
At the USC Indoor Open, the Bulldogs raked in four wins, including one that broke a school record.
Jesse Henderson finished first in the 60m hurdles, breaking the school record by a little more than 10 seconds at 7.74.
On the women's side, freshman Rosealee Cooper finished in second with a time of 8.25 while Cathrina Morris came in fifth at 8.82.
In the men's 3000m race, Giacomo DeLuca crossed the line in 10th, finishing in 8:10.02. He broke the previous school record of 8:10.22 set in 2009.
Keshun Byrd finished first in the triple jump with a personal-best 15.43m and finished fourth in the long jump at 7.11m, just behind teammate Shacquille Lowe in third with a distance of 7.14m.
Amy Warren finished first in the triple jump with a mark of 12.23m and placed third in the long jump with a new personal-best mark of 5.84m.
In the 60m dash on the women's side, Faith Gilbert came in second place at a season-best 7.50, while Jada McDougle came in sixth at 7.70.
Gilbert won the 200m with a season-best 23.98. The men's 200m saw Shamar Rose finish third in 21.30, a new best, with Sema'J Daniels coming in fourth in a best 21.66, and Jordan Barrow in 14th at 22.24.
Four Bulldogs competed in the women's 400m dash, three finishing in the top-10. Katie Martin had a new personal-best of 56.32, coming in fifth place. In eighth and ninth place were San'Toria Harris and Destini Pickens, respectively. Shayla Felder competed in the event for the first time, finishing in 16th.
On the men's side, Daniels finished in fourth while Kareem Agostino came in 15th, both competing in the 400m for the first time.
The women's 4x400m relay ran in two teams. Team A was made up of Rosealee Cooper, Faith Gilbert, Katie Martin and San'Toria Harris, finishing in second place in 3:47.03. Team B had Cathrina Morris, Destini Pickens, Jada McDougle and Shayla Felder and came in third in 3:51.85.
On the second day of the Music City Challenge, the Bulldogs came away with a win from Shayla Broughtonin the 60m hurdles. She updated her personal best in the event to 8.33. Just the day before, she won and nearly swept the pentathlon, setting a new personal best in points.
In the shot put, freshman Jhordyn Stallworth set a new personal best of 12.73m, finishing in ninth overall.
Senior Ashley Melcherts set a new personal best in the 800m, finishing in 24th in 2:16.31.
In the pole vault, Peyton Mickelson tied her season best height of 4m, finishing in third. Freshman Julia Lasley finished in eighth at 3.45m in her first collegiate meet.
Jeremiah Pierce also updated his personal best to 16.30m in the shot put, finishing in ninth.
Both Navasky Anderson and Leon Clarke finished top-10 in the 800m, finishing in eighth and 10th, respectively. They both revamped their PRs, Anderson to 1:50.55 and Clarke to 1:51.49. Freshman Omari Hammond finished in 26th place at 1:58.33.
In the 3000m, Sylvia Russell finished in 16th in 9:45.54 while Sydney Steely finished in 9:54.18 in 21st. Silvia De La Pena Garibay came in 26th after finishing in 10:18.53.
