Gunter Shares SEC Defensive Player Of The Week Award

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Mississippi State's Lilly Gunter shared the SEC's Defensive Player of the Week award announced Monday by the conference office.
Â
For Gunter, it's her second career weekly honor from the SEC. She was named the SEC's Freshman of the Week on February 15, 2021.

Gunter is the third State player to capture a SEC weekly award this season. She is joined by Shania Cromartie and Gabby Waden, who were named the SEC's Player of the Week and the SEC's Offensive Player of the Week on September 27 and October 18, respectively.

"I'm so proud of Lilly for having a solid weekend and for anchoring our first contact," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "She continues to get better and help our program have a special season. I'm very pleased with her efforts over the weekend in helping us get two solid wins against Texas A&M."

Gutner headlined the Maroon and White's back row defense with 4.50 digs per set as the Bulldogs ran their winning streak to four consecutive matches, all against RPI top 50 opponents. She amassed 23 digs during Saturday's match, which was her fourth outing of 20-plus digs in her last six appearances.

State's defense limited the Aggies to a .173 hitting percentage for the weekend. Gunter has piled up 10-plus digs in 18 of 20 matches in 2021 and collected 20-plus digs on seven occasions. She has amassed 4.59 digs per set in conference matches which is good enough for fourth place on the SEC leaderboard.

Mississippi State completes its October slate with a midweek road trip to Georgia. The Bulldogs will play three of their next four matches on the road. Wednesday's first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT from Athens. The match will be streamed online via www.ESPN.com/watch and the ESPN app.Â

State's next home match is against Alabama on Wednesday, November 3 with a 7 p.m. CT first serve. Admission is free for all home volleyball matches with gates opening one hour prior to first serve.
