State Women’s Tennis Travels To Furman For First 2021 Road Test
January 23, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Looking to build on a successful opening weekend, the Mississippi State women's tennis team is set for its first road trip of 2021. The Bulldogs (1-0) travel to Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday to face Furman (0-2) at the Mickel Tennis Center at 11 a.m. CT.
The match will mark the first-ever meeting between MSU and Furman in women's tennis.
"Furman will be one of the toughest non-conference opponents we will face this year," head coach Daryl Greenan. "They have already played a couple other SEC teams this month and came up just short. They are a strong team and I know they will be hungry to pick up a win over an SEC opponent. We had a solid showing at home last weekend that we want to build on. The Furman match will provide the perfect challenge in this second weekend of our season."
Mississippi State blanked in-state rival Southern Miss 7-0 to open the 2021 campaign on Jan. 15 at State's new Rula Tennis Pavilion. Against the Golden Eagles, MSU was undefeated in doubles and got singles victories from Tamara Racine, Magda Adaloglou, Emma Antonaki, Alex Mikhailuk, Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry. The 69th-ranked Antonaki holds an eight-match win streak dating back to last spring. Adaloglou has won nine of her last 10, the lone setback coming to the No. 13 player in the nation.
State went 16-6 overall in the Bulldog Kickoff last weekend on campus, against players from No. 12 Georgia Tech and Memphis. State was undefeated versus the Tigers and got ranked triumphs from Antonaki and Mikhailuk against the Yellow Jackets.
Though 0-2, Furman competed valiantly in two tight setbacks at home against Auburn (4-3) and at Tennessee (5-2) to open its season last weekend. The Paladin roster features 15th-ranked Katarina Kozarov and two ranked doubles tandems - No. 18 Julia Adams and Madison Dillon as well as 27th-ranked Julia Adams and Kozarov.
