Bulldogs Win Three on Day One of Commodore Indoor
January 15, 2021 | Track & Field
The field crew found three event wins, including a long jump sweep.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After 321 days since the last competition, the Bulldogs of Mississippi State track and field fared well on the first day of Vanderbilt's Commodore Indoor, seeing three event wins.
"I think it went really well today," said head coach Chris Woods. "We won three individual events overall and we've had several PRs. It's never easy to go to an SEC-only type of competition and to come out with three individual winners, so I'm really excited about how we got the weekend started. The bulk of our competition will be tomorrow, and I can tell just by the body language of our student-athletes that they are really excited to go out and to have the opportunity to compete. We just have to keep that momentum going from today and take that energy into tomorrow. The main thing is to come out of this meet healthy and I'm looking forward to next week's competition as well. First things first, we have to execute what we came here to do. Great start, but we can't rest our heads on what we've done today. We have to stay focused and keep our energy high and take that into tomorrow."Â
Helen Claire Edmonds started out the trifecta of first places for day one with her win in the high jump. She moved past her personal best as well, soaring 0.11m above her previous best. Aley Woodberry finished the event in eighth and just behind her was Emilia Lesniak in ninth.
Those three wins also included a long jump sweep.
With his long jump win of 7.40m, Jesse Henderson not only surpassed his previous best by 0.76m, but he cruised into the No. 3 spot in the nation as well.Â
Shayla Broughton helped complete the Bulldog sweep with her 6.13m jump, breezing past her previous best by 0.08m. Her jump was 0.14m further than the previous meet record of 5.99m set by Ryan Tolbert in 1996. Teammate Asia Poe finished in third place with a mark of 5.65m.
For throws, Francesca Chambers came in tenth in the weight throw with her heave of 16.48m. Once again, another Bulldog improved on their previous best, with Chambers adding 3.15m to her previous distance.
The men's weight throw finished out the events of the first day, with two newcomers competing. Daniel Pepper finished fifth in his first competition donning the Maroon and White, throwing to a distance of 15.83m. Cade Finley came in sixth overall with a mark of 15.11m. Freshman Trent Zelden came in eighth in his first collegiate meet with a mark of 13.93m.
Mississippi State will look for more event wins on day two of the Commodore Indoor, with the meet starting at noon with the women's shot put and 60m hurdle prelims.
The meet is being live streamed on YouTube and live results will be provided by C.F.P.I. Timing. A recap of the final day of competition will be posted to HailState.com after the completion of the day's events.
