State Wins Four on Final Day of Commodore Indoor
January 16, 2021 | Track & Field
The Dawgs of track and field came home with a total of six first place finishes on the weekend.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Mississippi State track and field program had six first place finishes for the entirety of the weekend at Vanderbilt's Commodore Indoor, with four coming on the final day.
Â
"It's been over 320 days since we've been able to compete," said head coach Chris Woods. "So for us to come out here and get as many 'W's as we did…we got a lot of wins today and yesterday. We had a lot of personal bests today and this is the first meet. This makes me really optimistic about the rest of our season. The competition is only going to get stiffer here as we go through the indoor season, but if we can continue to execute the same way we executed today and throughout the weekend, we're setting ourselves up to be a much better team than we were last year. That was the goal that we as a staff had at the beginning of the year – to be a better team than we were – and we're well on our way. We just have to stay injury-free moving forward, continue to train hard, and be the best coaches and student-athletes that we can be."
Â
State continued its winning ways on day two of the meet in Nashville, seeing more success in the field as well as in the distance races.
Â
Freshman Amy Warren found her first win as a Bulldog in her first collegiate meet, finishing in first in the triple jump with a mark of 12.29m. In third was Jada Grant, finishing with a jump of 11.48m to update her personal best by 0.09m.
Â
Navasky Anderson added to the newcomer wins with his first-place finish in the mile. He crossed the finish line in 4:15.69, running to a new personal best.
Â
In the women's 3000m, sophomore Sydney Steely came in first with a new personal best of 9:44.89. With her were Audrey Honiotes in sixth with a personal-best time of 10:04.47 and Ashley Melcherts who came in 10th at 10:38.56.
Â
Jesse Henderson hurdled to his second win on the weekend, finishing the 60m hurdles in 7.96 seconds. Freshman Terry Smith Jr. was not far behind, coming in third place at 8.24.Â
Â
Henderson also had a personal best in the 60m dash, shaving six seconds off his previous time in the prelims and replicating it in the finals at 7.00 flat. Also in the 60m dash were freshmen Jordan Barrow, Shacquille Lowe and Shamar Rose. Rose finished the highest of the four Bulldogs, coming in third with a time of 6.84. Just behind was Lowe in fourth at 6.91. Henderson finished seventh while Barrow finished eighth at 7.08.
Â
Personal bests continued to come, with Chandler Underwood finished in 8:23.64 in seventh. Giacomo DeLuca and Lake Spradling finished in eighth and 10th place, respectively. Luke Zacharias finished out the group in 11th.
Â
