State Women’s Tennis Blanks Southern Miss 7-0 In Season Opener
January 15, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's tennis kicked off the 2021 dual match season with a perfect 7-0 victory over Southern Miss Friday at the Rula Tennis Pavilion. The match marked the first women's dual match ever played in State's new indoor facility.
The win over USM marked the 10th-consecutive season-opening triumph for the Bulldogs (1-0) and 11th under 12th-year head coach Daryl Greenan. MSU has recorded 40-consecutive non-conference victories in Starkville, dating back to the 2013 season.
In doubles, State's new duo of Magda Adaloglou and Lilian Poling shut out Golden Eagles Monique Burton and Katia de la Garza by an extraordinary 6-0 ledger on court 1. Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk clinched the doubles point on court 2, taking down USM's Sarah Medik and Ebru Zenep Yazgan 6-3. Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry made up MSU's third pair and posted an impressive 6-2 victory over Stephanie Booth and Caroline Hudson to conclude doubles action.
State didn't take long to clinch the match as all six Bulldogs recorded straight-set singles wins. No. 69 Antonaki led the surge at the No. 3 position, as the 2020 ITA Southern Region Player to Watch grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yazgan. The senior Lizariturry posted State's third point with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hudson at No. 6. Adaloglou then clinched the match for the Bulldogs at the No. 2 position, extending her team-leading win streak to eight matches as she defeated Medik 6-3, 6-1.
Mikhailuk came back from down 5-4 to take the first set 7-5, and eventually win her match over Burton 7-5, 6-1. Marta Falceto picked up State's sixth point when she put together a 6-2, 6-4 defeat over Booth on court 5.
Tamara Racine secured the sweep at the top position. After falling in a tiebreaker in the first set, she fought back to win the second 6-2. The sophomore then fought valiantly in a super tiebreaker to eventually take the third set and the match 6-7(6), 6-2, 1-0(6).
Looking to ride the momentum from their Friday sweep, the Bulldogs will host players from Georgia Tech, Memphis and Ole Miss in the Bulldog Kickoff, an individual tournament, Saturday and Sunday at the Rula Pavilion. There will be two sessions of play each day – at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. CT. Live video and stats will be available for all action at www.HailState.com/livewt.
In conjunction with current COVID protocols that have been established, no fans or player guests will be allowed to attend this weekend's MSU Tennis matches. For all COVID/attendance protocols for 2021 MSU Tennis home matches, please visit www.HailState.com/gameday.
