Mississippi State Cross Country Kicks Off 2020 Season at SEC Preview

STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State cross country team is set to open the 2020 campaign at the SEC Preview on Saturday morning.
"I'm very excited about this upcoming season," distance coach Pat McGregor said. "We are very fortunate to be in a conference that values the student-athlete experience and has moved mountains to make sure we have a safe and competitive cross country season. This has been probably one of the longest gaps between competitions that any of these girls have had, so it will be good to see how they adjust back into racing. We are all enthusiastic and eager to compete!"
The meet, hosted by LSU, will be held at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The women's 5k begins at 9:45 a.m. CT, and features four of the Bulldogs' SEC foes in Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. Live updates and final results for the meet can be found at PrimeTimeTiming.com.
MSU is led by veterans Stephanie Peterson and Sylvia Russell, who were the Bulldogs' top finishers in 2018 and 2019, respectively. After redshirting in 2019, Peterson returns and brings with her a wealth of experience in her final season in Maroon and White. The Chattanooga, Tennessee native, has posted five-top 10 finishes throughout her cross country career, and ran the fourth-fastest 10,000m in school history to qualify for NCAA East Prelims in the 2018 Outdoor season.
Russell was the first Bulldog to cross the line in all five races she competed in last season, and scored at the 2019 SEC Outdoor Championships with a fifth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase.
Silvia De La Pena Garibay and Breja Hooks lace up their spikes for their second season in Maroon and White after successful opening campaigns. De La Pena Garibay placed within the top 100 four times in 2019, while Hooks finished withn the top 100 three times.
State will send nine Bulldogs to the line for Saturday's race, including eight returners in Audrey Honiotes, Hooks, Ashley Melcherts, Russell, Savannah Schwab, Emma Tucker, Ava Weems and Mary Beth Woodward. In addition, redshirt freshman Caroline Mattox will make her collegiate debut.
