SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Mississippi State men's golf is set for its third event of the spring, and seventh of the season, as it tees off this weekend at the Desert Mountain Outlaw Course for the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, the event MSU won a year ago.
The 12-team field will get started with 36 holes on Saturday (March 7) before Sunday's final round at the par-72, 7,107-yard course. Live stats will be available via Golfstat.
"We are really excited for this week and the opportunity in front of us," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "We know the course very well and have had success on it. I'm looking forward to watching these Bulldogs compete this week."
MSU started the spring with a tied-for-fifth placement at the Arizona Intercollegiate, but faltered with a ninth place showing at the Florida Gators Invitational in February.
"We have used the past couple of weeks to get better daily," Smith said. "Our only focus has been on improving each day and holding ourselves to our standard. We talked a lot as a team about playing for each other and being selfless. Teams that are the most together will be the most successful. I have so much belief in this group and the leadership we have."
MSU's win at Desert Mountain came as Smith's first head coaching win and the first win for the program since 2014. Three top-10 individual finishes led MSU to an 8-under 856 score, six strokes ahead of runner-up Kansas.
Garrett Johnson shot 9-under 207 over the three rounds to capture individual medalist honors at the 2019 event. Johnson is MSU's No. 1 in the lineup this weekend.
Johnson is followed out by Ford Clegg, who shot 5-under par to take a share of third last season. Ben Nelson, Hunter Logan and Austin Fulton complete the Bulldog lineup, and William Wann will play as an individual.
