SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Play was halted prior to the completion of two rounds Saturday (March 7) at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, as Mississippi State men's golf picked up from where it left off from last year's tournament victory.
With only first round scores official, MSU carded 10-under 278 in round one, its best 18-hole score at the event. State stood second on the tournament leaderboard behind No. 10 Vanderbilt following opening-round play.
Round two will restart at 8:50 a.m. CT, with live scoring available via Golfstat.
"I'm really pleased with how we came out and played our opening round," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "I felt like we had a lot of momentum early on and we did a good job of sustaining it throughout the round. In the second round, the wind picked up and made things a lot more difficult.
"We still have a couple of guys that need to finish strong tomorrow morning for the restart. Today was a good test, and tomorrow will be a great opportunity for us. We certainly need to do a better job of finishing and staying in the moment. We need to come out with excitement and focus on playing our games and doing what we do well."
Garrett Johnson and Ben Nelson each shot 4-under 68 in the opening round to carry the load. Ford Clegg added a 2-under score, while Austin Fulton shot even-par.
Johnson's 68 continues his history of dominance at the Desert Mountain Outlaw Course. Johnson won the event in 2019 thanks to an opening round 66 that guided him to a 9-under three-round total. He and Nelson sat tied-for-fourth after the first round.
