GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ben Nelson's top 20 individual finish Sunday (Feb. 16) at the Florida Gators Invitational highlighted a ninth-place team performance for Mississippi State men's golf.
Nelson shot an even score following two rounds of play on Saturday and finished tied-for-18th, the redshirt sophomore's best placement of the season.
MSU carded an 11-over par score in the final round, adding up to a 25-over 865 for the weekend at the par-70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course.
"It was a tough day out there for us today, but I know it will make us better," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "We need to do a better job of finishing and staying in the present. I thought we had a few uncharacteristic mistakes today which cost us."
"The guys never quit and will never quit. Ben stepped up in a big way for us this week. Going forward, we need to focus on doing the simple things well and playing with more discipline. This golf course can expose some weaknesses and that's why I love coming to this event."
Senior Garrett Johnson had his best round of the weekend, shooting 2-over 72. Nelson, sophomore Ford Clegg and freshman Hunter Logan all posted 3-over scores on Sunday. Junior Cameron Clarke shot 4-over in the finale.
The Bulldogs have until March 7 to prepare for the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, the event that MSU and Johnson swept last season.
