State’s Broska Highlights Opening Day Of Volunteer Showdown

KNOXVILLE – The Mississippi State men's tennis team concluded play on day one at the Volunteer Showdown Friday with junior Florian Broska highlighting the morning in singles action.
The three-day round robin tournament, which also features players from Middle Tennessee State, South Carolina and host Tennessee, will continue on Saturday with the Bulldogs and Blue Raiders battling in the afternoon session at 1 p.m. CT. Sunday's play will conclude with Mississippi State and South Carolina at 8 a.m. CT. Live stats and live video provided by UT will be available throughout the weekend.
Friday's action began with doubles as the Bulldogs battled three Volunteer tandems. On court one, Broska paired with Nicolas Ocana to face Tennessee's Andrew Rogers and Mark Wallner, falling in a 6-3 decision. In a close set, the freshman Bulldog duo of Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora was edged by the UT duo of Martim Prata and Josh Raab 6-4. Wrapping up State's doubles action were Alberto Colas and Gregor Ramskogler who dropped a tight 6-4 decision to Joel Gamerov and Johannus Monday.
In singles competition, Broska's triumph came over Tennessee's Pat Harper, as he fought off the Volunteer in 7-6(2), 6-4 fashion.
In other singles play, the Vol veteran Walton notched a 6-3, 6-2 decision over the MSU rookie Malesevic. MSU's Colas would battle hard in his first set, taking it 6-2, before Tennessee's Monday rallied for a 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-1 win.
In another three-set affair, the Bulldog freshman Tortora was edged by the Volunteers' Gamerov 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. State's Ramskogler fell 6-3, 6-1 to UT's Wallner. After a tight first set, Ocana was edged by Tennessee's Rogers 7-5, 6-3. Wrapping up State's action was junior Stedman Strickland who fell 6-1, 6-2 to the Vols' Raab.
