Bulldogs Secure Ninth at Season Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On Wednesday, Mississippi State's men's golf team wrapped up play at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, shooting 301 and placing ninth. Sophomore Ford Clegg tied for eighth individually firing 215 for the tournament (70-68-77).
Clegg shot two birdies in the final round, bringing his tournament total to 11. He matched Arkansas' Segundo Pinto at one under over the three-day event.
"I am very proud of our fight today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "I thought we came out a little bit tight early in the round and made some uncharacteristic mistakes. We showed a lot of grit and toughness on our last 11 holes which shows the character of this team. Garrett and Cameron played really big rounds for us today and kept us in the golf tournament."
Senior Garrett Johnson and junior Cameron Clarke both climbed 12 spots on the leaderboard on Wednesday to finish the tournament tied for 42nd. Johnson shot four birdies Wednesday while Clarke shot two.
Junior Austin Fulton and Sophomore Ben Nelson finished tied for 55th. Fulton shot his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, a 69 with five birdies.
The Golf Dawgs will take three weeks off before traveling to Franklin, Tennessee, for the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate on Oct. 25-27 at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Club.
"This was our first step in our journey and we will learn and grow from these experiences," Smith said. "We have a couple of weeks until our next event and we will make sure we are prepared."
