Bulldogs Complete First Round of Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate
October 25, 2020 | Men's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Mississippi State's men's golf team teed off its second event of their three-tournament fall season Sunday at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate in Franklin, Tennessee.
Â
The Bulldogs carded a 2-over 286 to finish the first round in 14th with a total of 13 birdies.
Â
Sophomore Ford Clegg and junior Cameron Clarke both shot 70's finishing the round in an 11-way tie for 29th. Clarke claimed five of State's 13 birdies, and Clegg collected four.
Â
Sophomore Ben Nelson and senior Garrett Johnson finished the round tied for 55th. Freshman Loïc Ettlin made his SEC debut with his first start of his career. Ettlin collected one birdie and shot a 6-over 77.
Â
"I thought we made way too many little mistakes today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "Our first three holes this morning put us behind the eight ball early on. We need to do a better job of adjusting to the conditions. The course played completely different than it did in the practice round and birdies could be had out there. We did a nice job of battling all day. We just need to be better the rest of the week. There is a lot of golf left and I believe in this team and what it's made of."
Â
The Legends will resume play Monday. Tee times will be announced at a later time.
