Bulldogs Close Hail State Classic With Perfect 6-0 Sunday
October 18, 2020 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's tennis went undefeated, posting six victories, on the final day of the Hail State Classic Sunday. The event took place at State's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre as well as the new Rula Indoor Tennis Pavilion, which hosted its first official collegiate matches this weekend.
State notched a 11-4 overall ledger (7-3 singles , 4-1 doubles) this weekend against players from Alabama and Ole Miss, including a perfect performance from senior transfer Lilian Poling, who went 6-0 individually (3-0 in both singles and doubles) in the two-day event. She was the only player from all three teams to do so.
"I thought we had a solid tournament overall and topped it off with our best performances today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Overall, we have competed well in tournament play this fall. I thought we raised our level this weekend and were able to pull out some close matches and earn a couple upsets."
In doubles to start the day, the tandem made up of freshman Alexandra Mikhailuk and the senior Poling notched a pair of wins, while State's freshman-sophomore duo in Marta Falceto and Tamara Racine earned one triumph. Mikhailuk and Poling defeated the Ole Miss duo of Tiphanie Fiquet and Kelsey Mize 6-4, before downing Alabama's Anne Marie Hiser and Sydney Riley by the same score. The state tandem rallied from 4-3 and a break down in both contests for their wins. Falceto and Racine posted a convincing 6-2 triumph over the Crimson Tide's Hiser and Riley in the second session of doubles play.
The Bulldogs continued their success in singles, claiming all three of their matches in the afternoon. Falceto grabbed the first, cruising past Alabama's Sydney Orefice in an impressive 6-1, 6-3 decision. Mikhailuk also tallied her singles victory with ease, sailing past the Tide's Hiser 6-3, 6-3.
Poling then put the exclamation point on her incredible first weekend at home as a Bulldog, recording victory in a thrilling three-set battle over Alabama standout Isabella Harvison. With the rest of the team cheering her on, the West Point, New York, native battled back from 5-1 down in the first set to claim a tiebreaker and the first set 7-6(7), After Harvison took the second set 6-3, the players battled to 4-4 in the third. Poling then stepped up strong to claim the match, losing only one point in the final two games, including breaking Harvison at love in the final game for a 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4 triumph.
State is now 22-12 overall in individual competition after its first two tournaments of the 2020 fall slate. Next weekend (Oct. 23-25), the Bulldogs travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the second time this fall to compete in the SEC Challenge #2 on the University of Alabama campus.
