Mikhailuk Wins As MSU Women’s Tennis Completes Day 1 At SEC Challenge #2

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Mississippi State women's tennis team opened play in the SEC Challenge #2 Friday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Freshman Alexandra Mikhailuk highlighted the day for the Bulldogs, registering a straight-set victory in singles.
Mikhailuk provided the lone victory for State as she ousted Ole Miss' Reka Zadori 6-2, 6-4. State fought hard in its other four matches, but the ball did not quite bounce the Bulldogs' way in some close sets that set the tone in those matches.
MSU opened the event in doubles play against two duos from Auburn. State's tandem of Mikhailuk and Lilian Poling built and early lead against Georgia Axon and Adeline Flach but eventually fell to the Tiger pair 7-5. Bulldogs Marta Falceto and Tamara Racine also fell – 6-3 to AU's Carolyn Ansari and Yu Chen.
In singles action, Auburn's Taylor Russo edged Poling 7-5, 6-2. Racine dropped a tight 6-4 opening set to Ansari before retiring in that contest.
"We definitely didn't play our best tennis today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "On one hand we played well to set up points, but we just have to be a little more decisive when opportunities arise. We have competed consistently well in tournament play this fall. We have to learn from today, make a few adjustments and compete hard tomorrow."
The Bulldogs conclude play in the SEC Challenge #2 Saturday, beginning with doubles at 10:30 a.m. CT and singles to follow.
