STARKVILLE – Lilian Poling led Mississippi State women's tennis with a perfect 3-0 record Friday on day one of the Hail State Classic. The event is taking place at State's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre as well as the new Rula Indoor Tennis Pavilion, which hosted its first official collegiate matches on Friday afternoon.
The two-day tournament, which also features players from Alabama and Ole Miss, will conclude with another day of action Sunday.
Poling opened the day with a doubles victory alongside freshman Alexandra Mikhailuk. The duo put on a gutsy performance as they defeated Alabama's Isabella Harvison and Moka Ito in a thrilling tiebreaker 7-6(8).
The senior transfer continued her success in singles. After falling to Ito in the first set in her opener, Poling mounted a furious comeback to take the next two sets and win the match 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(6), for the first-ever official victory to be recorded in the Rula Tennis Pavilion. Her third win of the day came outdoors in straight sets, as she ousted Ole Miss' Kelsey Mize 7-5, 6-1.
Marta Falceto and Valeria Nikolaev added two others to the Bulldogs' win column on the day. Nikolaev earned a tough victory in her lone match of the day, rallying to down Alabama's Sasha Gorchanyuk in a tight 6-7(3), 6-1, 1-0(8) decision indoors. Back outside, Falceto came out on top over Sydney Riley of Alabama 6-3, 7-6(4).
In MSU's other singles results on day one, State suffered a couple of tight three-set marathons indoors. Falceto fought hard but ultimately fell to Anna Parkhomenko of Alabama 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(3) in the first session. Mikhailuk dropped the first set against Ole Miss's Sabina Machalova 6-3, battled back to take the second 6-2 before slipping 1-0(4) in the super tiebreaker.
Outside in session two, the Rebels' Tiphanie Fiquet edged Mikhailuk in 6-1, 6-4.
And in State's only other result of the day in doubles, Falceto and Tamara Racine were overturned by UM's pair of Lilian Gabrielsen and Reka Zadori 6-3.
The Bulldogs will be back in action in the Hail State Classic Sunday, beginning with two doubles sessions at 10:30 a.m. CT and 11:30 a.m. Singles is slated to follow at 1:30 p.m. Though fans cannot attend in person due to COVID protocols, they can follow all of the action through live video and stats at www.HailState.com/livewt.
