Multis Shine on Opening Day of Power 5 Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – From their very first event of the day, Mississippi State's pentathletes were raising the bar at the Power 5 Invitational on Friday.
Shayla Broughton went on to place second in the event with a personal-best score of 3,862 points, which ranks fourth in school history. Asia Poe was right behind her, finishing with 3,800 points, a score that would've been just one point outside the Bulldog record book when the day began. Poe now ranks seventh in school history.
"The women's multis went exceptionally well today," head coach Chris Woods said. "If we can continue to improve there, I think that's an event where we could qualify two women to the national championship meet. Our sprinters who qualified today will also have a very special opportunity to test themselves against some of the best in our sport tomorrow morning."
The duo opened the day with season bests in the 60m hurdles, with Broughton matching her lifetime best in 8.42 to win the event. Alex Woodberry, competing in her first career pentathlon, broke the nine-second mark for the first time with a lifetime-best 8.99.
Poe jumped a career-best 1.73m (5-8.0) to win the high jump, while Broughton came just one centimeter shy of her best at 1.70m (5-7.0). Both Poe and Broughton threw career bests in the shot put. Despite in being her first time throwing the shot collegiately, Woodberry placed second in the event with a 12.22m (40-1.25) throw.
Woodberry matched her career best in the long jump at 5.59m (18-4.25). Both Broughton and Poe shaved seconds off their personal bests in the 800m to close the day.
On the men's side, Jesse Henderson ran a personal-best 7.10 in the 60m to open the heptathlon, but stumbled in the long jump where he fouled with no mark. He recovered and made up some ground in the high jump, but closed the first day with 2,038 points in sixth place. After two athletes did not finish in the open 60m hurdles, Henderson only had to cross the line to advance to Saturday's finals.
State will have two athletes in Saturday's highly-anticipated 60m finals. Lester Miller ran the second-fastest time in the men's prelims on Friday and will race at 11:15 a.m. CT. Meanwhile, Faith Gilbert clocked in at 7.48 in the women's prelims.
Gilbert will race alongside six-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix on Saturday. Felix ran just three-hundredths of a second faster in the prelims. Felix's nine Olympic medals are the most by any female track and field Olympian.
"Watching [Felix] compete in the 2012 Olympics in London is a memory that I will never forget," Gilbert said. "I remember jumping, screaming and celebrating with aspirations of one day being able to do the same thing. The opportunity to compete against not only an Olympian, but the most decorated woman in U.S. track and field history, will be an extremely honoring and humbling experience."
