ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Track and field programs from the SEC, ACC and Big Ten will gather at the University of Michigan this weekend for the Power 5 Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Mississippi State joins Louisville, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame and host Michigan at the U-M Indoor Track Building. In addition to the No. 23 Louisville men, six Olympians, including six-time gold medalist Allyson Felix, will raise the competition level for the Bulldogs with a month remaining before the conference championships.
"There will definitely be a little stiffer competition this weekend which is what we need at this point of the year," head coach Chris Woods said. "It's going to be exciting for the kids on the team to compete against those individuals and those teams. It's going to be a really good evaluation for the coaching staff to see where we stack up against those ranked teams. Also, to see how our kids compete after an off-week where we got some rest and solid training in, which is really important to us in the developmental process. I'm excited to see where we are at this point of the season. This is going to be our midway point as we make our build up into the SEC Championship."
MSU's weekend begins in the combined events at noon on Friday. Jesse Henderson, fresh off his first collegiate victory in the 60m hurdles, will compete in his first career heptathlon. On the women's side, Shayla Broughton will look to keep improving after posting two personal bests in her last competition. Broughton, Asia Poe and Alex Woodberry will begin the pentathlon at 12:30 p.m.
Action on the track begins with 60m hurdles qualifying heats at 3:45 p.m. followed by 60m prelims. Stephanie Peterson will compete in the 5000m at 5:10 p.m. Freshmen Shardonnay Nichols and Joshua Stradford run the 600m beginning at 5:50 p.m.
On Saturday, Henderson will conclude the heptathlon with competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. The day is heavily loaded with field events, beginning with the men's and women's long jump at 11 a.m. The finals of the 60m hurdles and 60m will begin the day on the track at noon.
State will also run men and women in the 200m, 400m, 800m, mile and 3000m. MSU's women will be represented in the pole vault, weight throw and triple jump in the afternoon, while Jeremiah Pierce throws the shot at 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs will split their squad next weekend for two meets on Feb. 14-15. One group will head to the Tiger Paw Invitational hosted by Clemson in Clemson, South Carolina, while the rest of the team heads to the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee.
