ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Mississippi State's track and field program closed a successful weekend with 16 top-three finishes at the Power 5 Invitational on Saturday.
Four Bulldogs claimed individual event titles. Cameron Crump broke his previous personal best by 40cm to win the long jump with a 7.40m (24-3.5) leap. In the afternoon, Brian Evans won the 400m, Terryon Conwell took the 200m crown and Dejon Devroe took home 800m gold.
Devroe's 1:49.29 would stand as the second-fastest time in the SEC this season entering the weekend and rank ninth in the nation. On the women's side, Charlotte Cayton-Smith finished ninth in the 800m, but her 2:10.42 would also stand as the SEC's second-fastest mark.
"I'm really proud of the execution and competitive spirit we showed today," head coach Chris Woods said. "We've placed an emphasis on competing to win our heats and races and reminded our athletes that performances would come from that if they focus on execution. This weekend, we saw marks we've been looking for all year thanks to that mentality. Now we have to apply that same mentality moving forward to our next competition."
Faith Gilbert placed third in both the 60m, where she went head-to-head with six-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, and the 200m. She posted a new personal best in the 200m in 24.46, taking nearly two-tenths off her previous time. Giacomo DeLuca also posted a career-best mark, taking nearly four seconds off of his mile time to finish third in 4:09.86.
The Bulldogs ran three relay teams, and all bettered State's existing season bests. The women's 4x400m relay of Cayton-Smith, Gilbert, San'Toria Harris and Cathrina Morris won the event in 3:47.89. MSU ran two teams on the men's side and finished second and third.
In the field events, Peyton Mickelson came up just short of her own school record in the pole vault. Mickelson cleared a season-best 3.94m (12-11.0) to place third. Her final bar was set at 4.09m (13-5.0), which would have surpassed her previous mark by 6cm. Meanwhile, Jada Grant placed third in the triple jump with a personal-best 11.39m (37-4.5).
