NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jesse Henderson's busy weekend culminated with a victory in the 60m hurdles on Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational. His time was one of nine personal bests for Mississippi State's track and field program on its final day in Nashville.
After competing in the long jump and setting a new career best in the 200m on Friday, Henderson nearly caught his personal-best in the prelims of the hurdles with a run of 8.16, which was just two hundredths of a second of his season best and five hundredths shy of his career mark.
In the finals, he clocked in at 8.00 to edge out Oklahoma's Isaiah Levingston (8.01) for his first career victory in any event. Henderson had never finished higher than fifth in any event.
"I'm really proud of all of the athletes that recorded personal bests today," head coach Chris Woods said. "We challenged them to focus on winning their sections more than concerning themselves with times and distances, and a lot of them were able to do that. We won a good amount of sections today, but there's a lot of room for improvement with a young team. This team has talent, but we need to show more consistent focus when we step into their events."
State opened the day with six of its first seven athletes, excluding first-time event runners, clocking personal bests. Lake Spradling placed 13th in the 3000m, taking a second off his prior best. Meanwhile, Blake Beavers shaved 14 seconds off his career mark in the event.
All three Bulldogs in the men's mile improved on their lifetime bests. Giacomo DeLuca was State's top man in the event at 4:13.24. Katie Martin ran her first sub-1:00 400m, crossing the line in 57.68, and Malcum Tatum finished the 800m in a personal-best 1:54.92. Sylvia Russell, running the first mile of her MSU career, was nearly seven seconds faster than her best mark from Buffalo.
Shayla Broughton placed fourth in the 60m hurdles, and Lester Miller finished sixth in the 60m. MSU's women's 4x400m relay improved its best mark of the season, running 3:49.73 to finish third.
The Bulldogs will take a week off before traveling to Ann Arbor, Michigan on Jan. 31 for the two-day Power 5 Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan.
