STARKVILLE - Mississippi State's men's tennis team – winner of back-to-back SEC Tournament Championships in 2018 and 2019 - will open a season ranked Top 25 nationally for the fourth year in a row this weekend, as the 21st-ranked Bulldogs are set to host a pair of double-headers on campus Saturday and Sunday.
The Bulldogs will open play Saturday against Tennessee Tech, followed by a bout with Samford. Due to heavy rains expected Saturday, the matchup with Tennessee Tech will begin at 10 a.m. and will be played indoors at MSU's McCarthy Gymnasium. Depending on the weather outlook following that match, the MSU-Samford contest could also be played indoors at McCarthy or outdoors at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre as originally scheduled. The match with Samford will not begin before 3 p.m. Fans should consult @HailStateMT on Twitter for the latest updates on all matches.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs will take on Tennessee Tech once again (11 a.m.), followed by a matchup with UAB (3 p.m.). Both of those affairs are on schedule to be played at the Pitts Tennis Centre.
State will look to extend a 23-match regular season home win streak this weekend. Under head coach Matt Roberts, MSU is 106-33 overall in his five seasons at the helm of the Bulldogs, 57-7 at home. In the last two years, Roberts guided the Bulldogs to a 47-7 overall mark, including back-to-back SEC Tournament Championships for the first time in school history.
On the court, State is led by senior All-American Giovanni Oradini, who is currently ranked 15th nationally in singles. True freshman Davide Tortora notched his first ever ranking at 101st nationally in the latest ITA release in November. Joining those two are returnees Florian Broska, Gregor Ramskogler and Stedman Strickland.
A host of other new faces will take the court for State in 2020 as well, including freshmen Isaac Becroft, Jonas Hartenstein, Nicolas Ocana and Alberto Colas Sanchez.
Following this weekend's action, MSU travels to Florida State on January 19 before returning home to host the 2020 ITA Kickoff Weekend (Jan. 25-26), when MSU welcomes No. 16 South Carolina, No. 19 Georgia and No. 22 Oklahoma to campus.
