Freshman Mikhailuk Paces Bulldogs on Day One at Debbie Southern Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mississippi State true freshman Alexandra Mikhailuk kicked off her collegiate career with an undefeated performance on day one of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic Friday. The Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native was 3-0 for the Bulldogs in her debut in the Maroon and White.
"Our focus going into this event was to battle and fight regardless of the score. We definitely had some great battles," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "I was impressed with the level of our doubles this morning. We stayed engaged and came up with the shots at big moments. I was happy we were able to pull out a couple of close wins. The singles competition was extremely high. We saw enough positives to build on. Tomorrow, we will have to make a few adjustments to get into the win column overall. It was a solid day and we are getting the high level challenges we need."
The MSU tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine – ranked 14th nationally – opened the event in a hard fought battle but ultimately fell to Duke's Chloe Beck and Meible Chi 8-6 in the first round of Flight 1. In the consolation semifinals, the duo responded by defeating Tennessee's 24th-ranked Tenika McGiffin and Kaitlin Staines 8-6. They will face Julia Adams and Katarina Kozarov of host Furman Saturday morning in the consolation finals.
State sophomore Emma Antonaki and Mikhailuk were successful as they went undefeated in Flight 3, first overpowering Wake Forest's Anna Brylin and Saby Nihalani 8-4 in round one, before besting Eleni Louka and Sydney Riley of Clemson 8-7(5) in a fierce semifinal battle. The MSU partnership will battle Florida State's Sasha Hill and Petra Hule in the title match of their flight on Saturday morning.
The freshman-senior pair of Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry fell to Georgia Tech's Gia Cohen and Nami Otsuka in an extremely tight 8-7(7) affair to open things. But the all-Spanish tandem bounced back in the consolation semifinals as they defeated Ohio State's Luna Dormet and Mary Beth Hurley 8-5, overcoming a 4-1 deficit for the victory. They will face South Carolina's Elise Mills and Kennedy Wicker in the consolation finals on Saturday.
In an additional doubles match, Bulldog junior Meredith Roberts paired up with Texas's Gabby Cusano to defeat Furman's Mary Hunter Hyche and Vanderbilt's Dasha Kourkina in an 8-4 decision.
MSU's 41st-ranked Antonaki opened singles action for the Bulldogs. The sophomore fell to 10th-ranked Kenya Jones of Georgia Tech 6-3, 6-0. Antonaki will meet Vanderbilt's 35th-ranked Georgia Drummy Saturday morning in the consolation semis.
In Flight 3, State's No. 115 Adaloglou was downed by 110th-ranked Allie Sanford of North Carolina 6-1, 6-0. She will prepare to compete against Duke's Chloe Beck Saturday in the consolation semifinals.
After going 2-0 in doubles, the State rookie Mikhailuk clinched her first collegiate singles victory against North Carolina's Anike Yargaladda 6-2, 7-5. She advances to the semifinals of Flight 4 on Saturday.
Racine fell in a three-set marathon to Joanna Silva of Tennessee 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in 2019-20 singles opener. The sophomore will compete against Furman's Maryann Rompf in the Flight 6 consolation semifinals Saturday.
In her MSU singles debut, Falceto fought valiantly against Florida State's Andrea Garcia but ultimately dropped a close three-set match 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3. The freshman looks to bounce back Saturday when she faces Zaina Nait Omar from Clemson in the consolation semifinals.
In Flight 9, the State veteran Lizariturry lost a tight first set before finally falling to Wake Forest's MC Meredith 7-6(4), 6-1. The senior Bulldog will resume action against Vanderbilt's Dasha Kourkina Saturday in the consolation semifinals.
In the last match of the day, MSU's Roberts dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Ema Lazic of Duke. She will face Tennessee's Kylie Duckworth Saturday in the consolation semifinals of Flight 10.
The Bulldogs will be back in action for day two of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic Saturday, beginning with doubles at 9 a.m. ET and singles to follow.
