Diamond Dawgs battle back twice against Tigers to win 10th-straight game at home
After Memphis (24-22) piled up seven runs in the top of the first inning, Mississippi State (39-10) chipped away with one in the first, three in the second and three in the fifth to knot the score. The Bulldogs took a one-run lead, 8-7, with a single run in the sixth, before Memphis tallied two in the seventh to recapture the advantage, 9-8. MacNamee then delivered the two-RBI double to right-center field to push MSU ahead for good, 10-9, in the eighth.
The bullpen was solid again, as five relievers combined to throw nine innings and allow just three runs on four hits. The bullpen walked three and struck out 10 batters. Graduate student Cole Gordon (4-0) threw the final two innings scoreless to earn his fourth win of the season, retiring all six batters faced with two strikeouts.
At the plate, all ten Diamond Dawgs that appeared at the plate reached base, with seven collecting at least one hit. Sophomore Tanner Allen reached base all five times at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a walk. He scored two runs and drove in one RBI. Senior Jake Mangum chipped in three hits and scored two runs, while fellow fourth-year Marshall Gilbert was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. MacNamee accounted for the fourth multi-hit game of the night, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs.
On the season, Mississippi State reached double digits on the scoreboard for the 15th time this season. The win also pushed State's record 14-0 in midweek games and is the 10th-straight win at home for the Maroon and White.
Quotable
Head Coach Chris Lemonis
On his message to the team after the top of the first inning
"I just pulled them up and said 'Hey, we have nine innings to go. It is like playing on the playground. We spotted someone seven, let's see if we can catch it up.' What you worry about is everyone tries to press and do too much. [We just needed to] get one [run] here, get two there. I though Marshall Gilbert's big hit got us right back in the ball game. I had a feeling we would score some runs. We are all pitching at the end of the year. Weekends are really important. I felt like we would get some at bats and it was nice to get some hits there late."
