STARKVILLE – With the 2019 team season in the books for the Mississippi State men's tennis team, four individuals are set to begin play in the 2019 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which begin Monday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
MSU's top-ranked Nuno Borges and No. 61 Giovanni Oradini begin play Monday in the 64-player singles draw. Borges has reached the NCAA Singles semifinals in two straight seasons, while Oradini returns to the draw after reaching the Round of 16 in his debut a year ago.
The NCAA Individual Championships feature 64 of the top singles players as well as 32 of the nation's best doubles pairs in a single-elimination tournament setting to determine the nation's best.
Action begins Monday at 11 a.m. ET, with Borges taking on No. 21 Alexis Galarneau of North Carolina State. Borges enters the singles championship on an incredible 26-match winning streak that is tied for the longest in program history. The three-time SEC Player of the Year owns a 32-2 overall record in 2018-19.
Galarneau earned an at-large bid after earning his second straight First Team All-ACC honor. The Canadian holds an ATP ranking of 390 as of May 13 and went 16-9 this spring at the No. 1 position for the Wolfpack. Most recently, Galarneau received Player to Watch honors in the ITA's Carolina Region.
At 1:30 p.m. ET, Oradini will take the court to face Charlie Broom of Dartmouth in the first round. Oradini is making his second straight appearance in the field of 64, earning All-American status after reaching the Round of 16 in 2018. The junior from Rovereto, Italy, owns an 18-12 overall singles mark and went 13-9 at the No. 2 position en route to being named the ITA Southern Region's Player to Watch and First Team All-SEC.
A First Team All-Ivy League selection as a junior, Broom enters the field as an alternate and is currently ranked 69th nationally. The Hertfordshire, England, native boasts an 18-13 overall singles ledger in 2018-19, going 9-10 in dual matches while primarily playing at the No. 1 position for the Big Green.
In doubles, which begins Tuesday, Borges will team up with Rakic to form the nation's third-seeded tandem while Oradini pairs with Niclas Braun as an at-large duo in the field of 32.
Borges and Rakic are slated to take on TCU's 15th-ranked pair of Alastair Gray and Alex Rybakov for the fourth time this spring and the second time in 10 days. Braun and Oradini will meet Texas Tech's ninth-ranked tandem of Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn. Match times for the two pairs will be determined Monday.
The Bulldogs are one of just two programs with more than one doubles pair in the tourney, joining TCU.
