STARKVILLE – After a second-place finish at the 2019 SEC Indoor Championships, sophomore Marco Arop leads a pair of Mississippi State track and field athletes who earned All-SEC honors, the league office announced Wednesday.
Arop's silver-medal performance earned him second-team laurels after he ran 1:47.86 to lead three Bulldogs in the top five in the men's 800m. He crossed the line just 0.4 seconds behind Texas A&M's Devin Dixon, who leads the NCAA in the event. The honor is Arop's second All-SEC accolade after earning second team honors during the 2018 outdoor campaign.
Asia Poe finished as the top freshman in the women's high jump to earn All-Freshman honors leaping a personal-best 1.72m (5-7.75), which is tied for fifth all-time in MSU indoor history.
Arop and Poe will wrap up the 2019 indoor season this weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships, held March 8-9 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The top 16 athletes nationally in each event qualified to compete.
Poe will hit the runway in the women's long jump on Friday at 7:10 p.m. CT, an event in which she is the only freshman to qualify. The Madison, Mississippi, native qualified with a mark of 6.30m (20-8.0) to win the event on Jan. 18 at the Vanderbilt Invitational and earn SEC Women's Freshman of the Week honors.
Arop is set to run in the 800m prelims on Friday at 7:27 p.m. The top three in both heats plus the next two fastest times will advance to the final on Saturday at 5:40 p.m. His highest qualifying mark came on Feb. 9 at the Tiger Paw Invitational, when he won the men's 800m by nearly four seconds with a blistering time of 1:45.90 that shattered both the school and Canadian national records in the indoor 800m. The 2018 NCAA Outdoor 800m runner-up has finished second or better in all four of his races this season.
