Starkville, Miss. – In a near-four-hour battle, Mississippi State's women's tennis team (12-9, 3-6 SEC), was edged 4-3 by Arkansas (10-10, 3-6) on Sunday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
The Bulldogs commanded the doubles point for an early edge. On court one, State's Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine toppled Lauren Alter and Tatum Rice in a 6-2 decision after earning the first four games of the match. Arkansas evened things on court two, with the Razorbacks' Thea Rice and Martina Zerulo overpowering Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli 6-3.
In a tight matchup on court three, all focus went to MSU's Janina Braun and Sara Lizariturry. The Bulldog pair took an early 3-0 edge in the match, but the Razorbacks cut the deficit to 5-4 in the final moments. Braun and Lizariturry persevered to break in the final game and take the match 6-4, putting MSU up 1-0 heading into singles.
After earning Friday's match-clincher against Missouri, the State senior Rentouli captured a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rijkers on court three, putting MSU up 2-0 in the match.
At the No. 1 position, the 82nd-ranked Bulldog true freshman Antonaki captured a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Arkansas' 115th-ranked Zerulo to give MSU an early 3-0 edge. The rookie earned her team-leading 24th victory of the season and is now 7-2 vs. ranked opponents in 2018-19.
The Razorbacks then started their comeback, cutting the deficit to 3-1 with a win on court two where Arkansas' 73rd-ranked Tatum Rice ousted State's Adaloglou 6-3, 6-3.
The last three matches on court would all go three sets.
MSU's Racine looked secure in her match at the No. 4 spot, just points away from victory in the second set, but the Razorbacks' Alter came back to force a tiebreak for the set which she won to force a third. She went on to down Racine 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3.
State's Braun then fell in an equally tight affair of her own - 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Arkansas's Miruna Tudor on court five - tying the match 3-3, and putting all attention on court six where the match would be decided.
The Bulldogs Lizariturry battled through the first set, overcoming a 5-3 deficit to take it 7-5 over UA's Carr. Carr came back to win the second set 7-6(1), forcing a third to decide the entire match. With both squads looking on from the neighboring court, Carr posted a 7-5, 6-7(1), 6-2 triumph to clinch the Arkansas victory.
Next Up For MSU…
State will travel to fifth-ranked Vanderbilt to battle the Commodores at 3:30 p.m. CT Friday, April 5, at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Vanderbilt is 12-5 on the season, 7-2 in conference action.
