State Women’s Tennis Falls 4-1 To No. 6 Vanderbilt In Nashville

Nashville, Tenn. – Despite claiming the opening doubles point, Mississippi State's women's tennis squad (12-10, 3-7 SEC) fell 4-1 to sixth-ranked Vanderbilt on Friday at the Currey Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs showed strength to start the day, earning the opening advantage in doubles. On court 2, State's Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli first fell 6-0 to VU's Fernanda Contreras and Georgia Drummy. MSU answered with Janina Braun and Sara Lizariturry ousting Commodores Summer Dvorak and Christina Rosca 6-1 on court 3 The triumph was the seventh-straight by the Bulldogs pair as they improved to 11-1 this spring.
With all eyes on court 1, the Bulldogs' 57th-ranked tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine overturned the Commodore tandem of Emma Kurtz and Emily Smith in a tight 7-5 affair, breaking serve in the final game to put State up 1-0.
Vanderbilt took control of the match in singles, claiming five of six first sets. State's Adaloglou fell first to VU's 14th-ranked Rosca 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 3 position, tying the match 1-1. At No. 5, the Bulldogs' Meredith Roberts was bested by the Commodores' Dvorak 6-1, 6-1.
On court 1, MSU's 67th-ranked true freshman Antonaki dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to VU's 63rd-ranked Drummy 6-3, 6-4, giving Vandy a 3-1 edge.
On court 6, MSU's Lizariturry took the first set 7-5 over Vanderbilt's 115th-ranked Smith. Smith responded, forcing a third set and eventually clinching the match with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 triumph.
The remaining two matches were suspended, with MSU's Rentouli trailing Vandy's fourth-ranked Contreras 7-6(3), 5-5 in a very tight battle on court two. The No. 4 spot was also abandoned, with State's rookie Racine trailing Carolyn Campana 6-3, 5-7, 5-2.

In the last regular season road match of 2019, the Bulldogs travel to Lexington, Kentucky, Sunday for a 12 p.m. CT contest against 26th-ranked Kentucky at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex. The Wildcats lead the series 37-5 over MSU, 19-0 in Lexington. Last season, MSU posted an impressive 4-0 shutout over the Wildcats in Starkville, as part of the Bulldogs' school-record, five-match SEC win streak. MSU has won two of the last three meetings between the teams.
