CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Its third tournament in as many weeks, the Mississippi State men's golf team begins play at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Saturday.
The two-day event will begin with two rounds on the opening day, then close Sunday with one final round at the par-72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course. Live results will be available via Golfstat.com.
Junior Peng Pichaikool and SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week Ford Clegg return to Dusty Smith's scorecard, looking for their seventh and fifth consecutive top-15 finishes, respectively. Pichaikool finished as the runner-up last weekend at the Schenkel Invitational and Clegg tied-for 13th to help MSU take fourth place as a team.
Pichaikool is the 25th-ranked golfer in Golfstat.com's Top 100. The Bangkok, Thailand, native is the third-highest ranked player in the event, right behind North Florida's Phillip Knowles (23) and Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk (24). Fisk was the only golfer to finish higher than Pichaikool at the Schenkel Invite.
Clegg is one of two SEC freshmen to collect four or more top-15 performances, behind only Georgia's Trent Phillips, who has six.
Junior Garrett Johnson returns for his 20th consecutive event for MSU, a streak that stretches back to his freshman season in 2016-17. Senior Ross Bell will make his sixth start of the season.
Redshirt freshman Ben Nelson rounds out Smith's scorecard, making his first career start. Nelson played in MSU's previous two tournaments, at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate and the Schenkel Invitational, both times as an individual.
Three of Golfstat.com's Top 50 teams highlight a 14-team field at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate which include No. 13 North Florida, No. 24 Illinois and host No. 30 North Carolina. The trio will play along alongside Elon, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, James Madison, Kansas State, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, UNC-Greensboro and UNC-Wilmington. Mississippi State falls just out of the Top 50 at No. 51.
This weekend's field will also include seven of Golfstat.com's top 100 players.
Play is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. Mississippi State's student-athletes will start from holes 4-6.

MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith:
"This is our next step in our journey and we are hungry for another chance to compete this week. We challenged our team this week to play with a sense of freedom out there. It's important we improve on doing the little things well this week. No one has to be more, we need to stick to what we do and play Mississippi State golf."
