STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State's women's tennis squad (11-6, 2-3 SEC), ranked No. 50 nationally this week, hits the road to face the 29th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers (12-5, 2-3) at 2:30 p.m. CT on Friday, March 22, at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
In 2019 dual-match conference action, State is 2-3 against SEC foes. Following a 4-2 triumph over the 39th-ranked Auburn Tigers on Friday, MSU has now collected two top 50 triumphs in conference play this season. State is 2-1 overall against ranked SEC opponents.
Bulldogs In The Oracle ITA Rankings …
MSU jumped into the national team rankings for the first time this season on Wednesday, sealing the No. 50 position after triumphs over the now-31st-ranked Florida Gators and No. 47 Auburn Tigers. State's victory over the Gators in Gainesville was a program-first accomplishment, with Bulldogs Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli posting upset singles wins over top 60 players. MSU's win over Auburn broke a four-match State skid in that series.
The State true freshman Antonaki held steady in the singles rankings this week at No. 82, holding a team-leading 21-8 overall singles mark through fall tournament play and 17 dual matches. Antonaki retains a 4-3 record against ranked opponents, 4-1 against top 60 contenders. From Feb. 9-March 3, Antonaki maintained a team-leading, 11-match win streak, downing two top 40 contenders in the process.
Know The Foe: Tennessee
The 29th-ranked Volunteers enter Friday's matchup with a 12-5 overall ledger, 2-3 in conference action. UT opened its SEC slate with back-to-back top 25 home wins against 21st-ranked Texas A&M and 15th-ranked LSU as part of a three-match win streak at the time. Tennessee's longest streak of dual-match play spanned from Feb. 10-Feb.24, with six-consecutive triumphs.
In the Oracle ITA singles rankings, UT's Sadie Hammond sits in the 85th spot. She maintains a 6-5 singles record in the Volunteer's top position. Hammond and Kaitlin Staines also make up the nation's sixth-ranked doubles pair. Hammond and Staines have earned a 12-1 dual-match record, 3-1 in SEC action, and a remarkable 18-1 overall mark on the season.
In 2018 dual action, UT earned a 18-12 overall record with a 3-10 SEC mark. The Volunteers advanced to the NCAA Tournament, but fell in the first round to Oregon in a 4-2 affair.

MSU split a pair of SEC home-opening contests at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Friday (March 15) and Sunday (March 17) against 39th-ranked Auburn and the Alabama Crimson Tide. State toppled Auburn in a 4-2 affair to secure the Bulldogs' second ranked conference win of the season. MSU then fell in heartbreaking 4-2 fashion to the Tide on Sunday to close out the weekend at home.
