March 16, 2019 | Men's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. – After taking a tightly-contested doubles point, the No. 10 Mississippi State men's tennis team surged past Auburn en route to a 4-0 victory on Saturday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs (13-3, 5-1 SEC) took five of six first sets in singles to go on and trounce the Tigers (11-12, 0-6) at the midpoint of the 2019 Southeastern Conference slate. MSU improved to 30-21 in the series since 1969 and has won 13 of the last 15 meetings between the teams, including six in a row. The blanking of Auburn marks the third time in SEC play this season that the Bulldogs have not surrendered a point.
"Auburn came at us early and played a great doubles point," head coach Matt Roberts said. "We had to make a big push to get through doubles, and I was very proud of how the guys accepted the adversity and embraced the challenge. We played some very tough singles and had a lot of energy on every court. Everyone was very positive, and it was a lot of fun competing together."
The Tigers played MSU tight in doubles on all three courts, but it was the Bulldogs who would continue their trend of taking a 1-0 lead into singles action.
At No. 3 doubles, the match was back-and-forth with both pairs holding serve throughout until the Bulldog duo of Trevor Foshey and Gregor Ramskogler broke in the last game to down Auburn's Diego Chavarria and Anders Fry 7-5.
On court 1, State's seventh-ranked tandem of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic had to battle back in their match, rallying from down 4-1 to knot the match up at 4-all before both sides held serve to make it 5-all. Borges and Rakic broke Auburn's Brandon Laubser and Tad Maclean to go up 6-5 before serving it out to clinch the point for the Maroon and White.
The Bulldogs have now won the doubles point in 26 of their last 27 matches, including seven in a row.
At the time of Borges and Rakic's clincher, MSU's third-ranked team of Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini trailed 5-1 in a tiebreaker on court 2 versus AU's Matteo DeVincentis and Filipo Mora.
In singles, the third-ranked Borges quickly put State up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 ousting of AU's DeVincentis on court 1 to remain undefeated in dual match singles this season and tie Thomas Dupré (1995-98) as MSU's career leaders for dual match singles wins with 70. The senior extended his overall singles winning streak to 15 matches.
The two-time defending SEC Player of the Year Borges also passed Matthieu Ballay (1996-99) for second all-time in total dual match wins in a career (119). In total victories, the Maia, Porto, Portugal, native is now tied with Malte Stropp (2010-14) for seventh all-time at MSU (166).
Moments later, on the adjacent court 2, the 102nd-ranked Bulldog Oradini trounced Auburn's Mora 6-1, 6-1 to make it 3-0 MSU. Oradini has now won two in a row in singles.
On court 4, Niclas Braun provided State's match-clincher for the fourth-straight time with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over the Tigers' Laubser. Braun extended his singles winning streak to three matches with the victory.
State was up a set in two of the remaining three matches when play was suspended. Rakic led Maclean 6-4, 4-4 on court 3 and Ramskogler was up 6-4, 4-5 at the No. 6 spot over AU's Michael Durham. MSU's Foshey trailed Tim Dollman 6-4, 5-3 on court 5.
Next Up For MSU …
State now returns home to the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre to square off against No. 22 Tennessee (3/22, 3 p.m.) and No. 26 Georgia (3/24, 1 p.m.) in another pair of marquee SEC matches. Admission is free to all home MSU tennis matches during the regular season.
