STARKVILLE – A pair of Mississippi State track and field athletes are set to travel across the state line to Birmingham, Alabama, for the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The top 16 athletes in each event qualify for the final event of the 2019 indoor season, with 2019 SEC indoor 800m runner-up Marco Arop making his second appearance in the indoor championships after earning second team All-America honors in 2018. Arop also placed second at the outdoor championships in June. Freshman Asia Poe, the only freshman to qualify in the women's long jump, is getting her first taste of nationals competition.
"I'm really excited to see how Marco and Asia compete with the best in their respective events this weekend at nationals," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "They've worked incredibly hard to get to this point and have earned their way into this position. I'm very proud of the indoor season they have had for us and they're going to be key contributors to our success in our upcoming outdoor season."
Poe will hit the runway in the women's long jump on Friday at 7:10 p.m. CT. The Madison, Mississippi, native qualified with a mark of 6.30m (20-8.0) to win the event on Jan. 18 at the Vanderbilt Invitational and earn SEC Women's Freshman of the Week honors. Poe's mark is tied for 12th in the NCAA and is third in the SEC.
Most recently, Poe finished as the top freshman in the women's high jump to earn All-Freshman honors leaping a personal-best 1.72m (5-7.75), which is tied for fifth all-time in MSU indoor history.
Arop qualified with a school-best and Canadian national record time of 1:45.90 in the indoor 800m set Feb. 9 at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson. The Edmonton, Alberta, native is slated to toe the line at 7:27 p.m. in the 800m prelims. The top three finishers in each heat plus the next two fastest times advance to the final at 5:40 p.m. on Saturday.
At the SEC Championships, Arop earned second team All-SEC laurels with his second-place finish in 1:47.86, just 0.4 seconds behind Texas A&M's Devin Dixon, who holds the top qualifying mark in this year's field.
The championships will be broadcast on ESPN3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday. ESPN will re-air the event at 6 p.m. on Sunday, while ESPNU will re-air at 10:30 p.m. on Monday. Live results are also available through the NCAA's website.
