ORLANDO, Fla. – Facing a top-25 team for the fourth match in a row, No. 9 Mississippi State men's tennis held off No. 21 Oklahoma for a hard-fought 4-2 win at the USTA National Campus in Orlando on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (8-2) won the doubles point and grabbed a pair of tough three-set triumphs late to pull away from the Sooners (7-3). The win evened the series between the teams at 2-2.
"It was a great match," head coach Matt Roberts said. "I'm very proud of the guys and how they competed. Nuno (Borges) and Strahinja (Rakic) were unreal for us from the start to give us a quick advantage at No. 1, and then it came down to (Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler at) No. 3. Trevor (Foshey) and Giovanni (Oradini) made a good push. I'm just really happy with all three doubles teams. Singles was unreal for us. The guys have a lot of resiliency and grit right now. I was really happy with how we competed in the heat and played tough outdoor tennis. I'm really proud of them."
The Bulldogs started off the match like they had in 19 of the previous 20 matches – by taking the doubles point. On court 1, State's 11th-ranked duo of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic notched a quick 6-2 triumph over Oklahoma's Spencer Papa and Jake Van Emburgh.
A few minutes later on court 3, the Bulldog tandem of Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler posted a 6-3 victory against the Sooner pair of Jochen Bertsch and Stefano Tsorotiotis to clinch the point for the 20th time in 21 matches dating back to the 2018 season. Trevor Foshey and Giovanni Oradini were knotted up at 4-all against Oklahoma's Aleksandre Bakshi and Ferran Calvo at No. 2 when play was suspended.
The Sooners knotted things up for a few moments when Ferran Calvo defeated State's Rakic 6-1, 6-3 on court 3. A few minutes later, the 80th-ranked Oradini knocked off OU's Bakshi in a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles.
OU tied things up again on court 5, when the Sooners' Bertsch claimed a tight 6-4, 6-4 decision over Broska.
With the score knotted at 2-2, the final three matches of the day would go three sets, with each team needing two of the three to clinch the victory.
The Bulldog rookie Ramskogler put the Bulldogs ahead for good at 3-2, roaring back from dropping the first set to claim a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph over OU's Rafa Izquierdo on court 6.
On court 1, MSU's senior All-American Borges had taken a quick first set against OU's 61st-ranked Papa, but the Sooner evened it up by claiming the second set with a tight 7-5 margin. Borges and Papa kept that battle going into the third set, eventually going into a match tiebreaker.
In the breaker, Borges stormed out to a 4-0 lead before Papa finally got onto the board. It was too little too late for the Sooner, however, with Borges serving it out to take the match 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(2) and clinch the victory for MSU.
Borges' fellow senior Foshey led 2-1 in the third set on court 4 against OU's Jake Van Emburgh at the clincher.
