State Drops Late Contest To Missouri
February 14, 2019 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – Three-point shooting led Missouri past Mississippi State on Thursday night as the Bulldogs saw their home and conference winning streaks snapped in a 75-67 defeat.
Anriel Howard led MSU (22-2, 10-1 SEC) with 21 points and six rebounds before fouling out with 1:47 to play. Teaira McCowan recorded her 59th career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Andra Espinoza-Hunter (12 points) and Bre'Amber Scott (10 points) joined them in double-figures.
"I felt like, all night, I was really fighting the heart thing—playing hard, playing with energy," head coach Vic Schaefer said. "We got out-toughed and out-hustled just about every loose ball. You know, it was just one of those nights. I don't want to take anything from Missouri. Missouri was special tonight, and they deserve all the credit."
State was outscored 24-16 in points off turnovers and lost the ball 18 times. The Bulldogs held a 35-24 edge in rebounds, but the Tigers' (19-7, 8-4 SEC) hot shooting kept them in the contest.
For the game, Missouri made 11 three-pointers, the most MSU has surrendered this season. The Tigers shot 55.1 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from beyond the arc.
MSU held a five-point edge through the first 10 minutes, but Missouri fought back in the second and third quarters while going 15-of-22 (68.1 percent) from the field in the middle frames. That gave the Tigers a one-point lead, up 54-53. State regained the lead on the first shot of the fourth quarter with a three-pointer from Scott, but would not hold a lead again in the contest.
The teams traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter, but Missouri took a controlling lead on a three-pointer from Cierra Porter with 39.9 seconds to play to put the Tigers up six, their largest lead to that point.
MSU fouled three times in the final minute. Jazzmun Holmes sunk a three-pointer with 18 seconds on the clock, but Missouri made 5-of-6 free throws to hold on for the win.
With the loss, the Bulldogs see their 32-game home winning streak, which was the fourth-longest active streak in the nation, come to an end. MSU's conference winning streak also dies at 26 games, which tied the 1987-90 Auburn teams for sixth-longest in SEC history.
The Bulldogs will travel to College Station, Texas, on Sunday, Feb. 17, to meet No. 22/23 Texas A&M. State tips off against the Aggies at 1 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
