NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Day three at the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships proved to be the final day of Mississippi State men's tennis' 2019 fall slate as Giovanni Oradini and Gregor Ramskogler fell in their respective singles matches on Friday after each dropped close first sets.
The senior veteran Oradini started off the day for State by battling Damon Kesarsis of St. Mary's College in the main draw's Round of 16. Oradini took an early 4-1 lead to push ahead in the first set. However, Kesarsis battled back to even the set and ultimately claim it by a tight 7-5 margin. The two stayed on serve for the first few games of the second, but Kesarsis took the lead and finally the match 7-5, 6-2.
The All-American Oradini concluded his final fall campaign as a Bulldog with an impressive 8-3 record, which included making the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships and the Round of 16 this week at ITA Fall Nationals – the two major collegiate events of the fall schedule.
Ramskogler would wrap up play for the Maroon and White in the Round of 16 of the consolation draw against 41st-ranked Charlie Broom of Dartmouth. The Hertfordshire, England, senior proved the more experienced player, edging State's sophomore in a very close first set tiebreaker to go on and claim the match 7-6(6), 6-2.
Ramskogler, who won eight straight matches at one point, ended his most impressive semester of play as a Bulldog at 12-6 this fall. Among his highlights this autumn were claiming the 2019 ITA Southern Regional Championships' singles crown. He also recorded the first ranked win of his career on Thursday, ousting North Carolina's 50th-ranked Joshua Peck in the first round of consolation play.
Oradini, Ramskogler and the remainder of the Bulldog squad now look to the 2020 dual match campaign. State will open the season by hosting a pair of non-conference doubleheaders on January 11 (Samford/Tennessee Tech) and 12 (Tennessee Tech/UAB). The full 2020 Bulldog schedule can be viewed on HailState.com.
MSU ended the 2019 season ranked No. 9 nationally after reaching the NCAA Round of 16 and claiming the SEC Tournament Championship for the second consecutive season.
